I recently swapped the rectifier tubes in my MAZ 18 and Carmen Ghia to a 5V4. This seems to have brought down the volume of the amp a bit and given it a different feel which I really like.
Is it advisable and safe to swap the 5AR4 in the Z Wreck to a 5V4? Is there a different rectifier tube that will lower the volume of the Z Wreck?

you should be ok, don't use a 5Y3 however. 5V4's are great in a Ghia also.

John, the Ghia w/5v4 is a bit tighter, ruder, cleaner. Just the way I like it. A bit the opposite of going from a 5Ar4 to a 5V4 in a bigger amp.
voltage drops are around, 17V 5ar4, 25V 5v4, 50V 5y3, 50V 5u4, SS recto 0V for reference.
If you want an even looser Wreck you could use a 5U4, same drop as the 5y3 but enough current to handle 4 el84's.

I'm interested in your description (if you try it) after the switch on your wreck.
Am I correct? You're saying that you got more clean headroom on the maz.

I will give the 5v4 a try in the Z Wreck this week and post back the results. The MAZ 18 with the 5V4 had less clean headroom and seemed to break up earlier and the amp was overall a little quieter. Exactly what I needed.

I am curious if it is also possible to swap the stock rectifier tube for a 5u4G.....
