I just took my 63 strat in to get a fret job. Original frets were SMALL not to mention a little worn down from 40+ years of playing. I'm use to a taller fret, but there is also quite a variety of widths. How much does that affect tone? If not much, what are the advantages of a wider fret other than extended life?

wide frets would affect your intonation, as they wear down. overly tall frets may affect your intonation from the get go if you have a heavy touch.
if i may sound like a vintage weenie for a moment, is that a real '63 Strat? if so, keep the original frets in a baggie and put them away.

I kept the original frets when they did the tele, but they're more curiosity than anything. Some of them were worn to the board. I refretted my tele with 6100 jumbo wire, it plays great, and supposedly the big frets give more sustain. I don't know about that, but I do like those big frets. If you don't want big wide frets (doesn't look vintage) but want the height, get 6105 which is about the same height in a narrower fret. If you want vintage again, go vintage. What is your playing style? What kind of music? Big hands? heavy touch?

I actually went with a fret a touch wider and about .12 higher (I think). I've got some HUGE frets on my tele and I wish I'd have gone a little smaller. I heard SRV played super big frets so that's what I got back then. Now I'm a little more in tune with what I like. I'll be able to play the strat comfortably, but I was wondering if I was giving up some tone with the narrower frets. Seems like play past the 12th will be easier with narrow frets than wide. More room for your fingers.

I know we worry on intonation but honestly if were out a fraction do you really think anyone notices ?

I know we worry on intonation but honestly if were out a fraction do you really think anyone notices ? it all depends on what that "fraction" is.
