A dumb question, and apologies for inflicting it on this esteemed forum, but my excuse is that I have simply never owned a tele, ever, ever, in my whole life. The Lentz HSL has been a joy but I have a question about the saddles which seem to be a traditional design in brass.
The question. Is it normal to have spaces between them, or should the ends touch? There seems to be a little scope for both options in the way the strings lay over them. When I restrung the HSL I didnt think much about it and the saddles just ended up touching end to end and looked fine. However I noticed a slight buzz on the top E when fretted high and realised the string was sitting very close to screw height adjuster and that got me realligning the saddles to get the string clear.
There are now small gaps, there is no buzz and everything is fine but since the whole bridge assembly is rather unconstrained and could be set up in slightly different ways it got me thinking about what is the right way to do it. I just kinda assumed that the saddles should touch to add rigidity and mass. I guess the screws eventually bite themselves a little hole in the new base plate in time so its important to get this right? Or are there ones there already and the saddles position themselves (eek I havn't looked!). Or maybe I am just making too much fuss about what must be the simplest bridge on the planet!
Any advice on this?

Please don't make anything of it at all. They can touch or not. And touching will not increase rigidity and mass. The breaks in the pieces themselves preclude that.
