Just got a set yesterday to put in the Peavey HP Custom. I dig the stock pickups, actually... Very "modern" sounding... But I'm just a bread & butter kind of guy, so I'm going to get the more traditional setup in there to see how I like it. I'm actually dropping the guitar off today at the luthier to have them changed and do some setup adjustments.
I've talked to a couple of other players who say they dig the Virtual PAF's...Just curious to see if any of you folks have messed with them at all-

I have had a couple in my Les paul Deluxe (yea, had it routed many years ago). I think they are excellent. Keep their clarity and definition and overdrive really well. I took out the '59/ JB combo because I found them too muddy. These cured that problem without giving up any warmth and have a smooth attack.

Never played the pups in question, but I really like the Duncan alnico 2 pros for the kind of sound you seek.
Not real creative I know, but they are decent sounding pups:)

Found I didn't like the pups I put in my H-535 so I bought these Seth Lover 50th Anv. pups that were on Ebay . Coming up out of Texas so they should have some bad arse Texas MoJo in em !! ;D DiMarzio's have always been a favourite pup for a lot of players and guitar companies and were pretty much the only pup back in the 80's . Seem's they don't have the market like they used to though , I guess a lot of other companies are taking a share of it now . Let us know how they sound .

"I have had a couple in my Les paul Deluxe (yea, had it routed many years ago)." Yikes! And what's worse is that those mini hummers were really fabulous at cutting through a mix. Awesome little performers, they were. Doin' a bit of weed back then, huh?

I understand why people took out the Mini's back in the day...the bridge pickups had chronic issues of being much lower output than the neck and very thin sounding. I have the same thing on my Firebird. Now I wouldn't dare do anything unorthodox to my 'bird, but if value didn't matter, I'd change the bridge cavity to a P-90.

Don't regret taking them out at all...they were never "all that". C'mon. Everything old wasn't great. Maybe your smokin' a bit of weed now...I quit years ago, 'bout the tiime I took those pickups out.

A lot of those mini hum Les Pauls squealed like a stuck pig at gig volume, and that was without high gain. People didn't know what to do about that then, plus they wanted more output from the guitar, so lots of them were routed. By the late 70s people knew how to pot their pickups and later some good pedals finally became available but too late.

Routing a $100 Yamaha never bothered me at all. The Les Paul Deluxe was a unique blend of fabulous neck, and a nice little single coil fighter as Gibson saw it. They certainly didn't have the huge honking tone that the full HB's did, and that was OK. For that job, the Standard or the Custom were the right tools, I think. Maybe even my old 1958 ES-355 with PAF's would get that job done, who knows? Routing a Deluxe bothers me a bit, that's all. It always did.
A lot of guys I know didn't stop smoking weed soon enough. That's where their money went , so therefore they were unable to buy the real deal, and resorted to routing. I have a '55 Telecaster that squeals a bit too in certain conditions. I should probably trade it even up for a new Nocaster if I'm smart, or maybe just put in some of those Noiseless PU's in it. Any advice?

I'd say keep the '55, but replace the pickups with wax potted ones, that should cut down on squeal. I wouldn't go noiseless, since the general concesus on the forum is that the Fender Noiseless PUs don't quite get the job done right (Kinmans are a different story though).

Hey Tele 1962...25 years ago they were just "used" guitars. This one is mine till I die and yes it does have a great neck and killer tone. And trading you 55 tele for a new nocaster is really stupid...dont do it...take skydog's advice...

I had a '69 Goltop Deluxe, my first LP. (250 bucks, went to a guys apt. with my dad to buy it in about '72!) Like y'all say, it did have a very nice neck. Bigger headstock than the '68 w/ P-90's My amp back then was an Orange OR120 that ya had to run BOTH cabs with or you'd blow speakers. A little loud. ;^) Anyway, I always LOVED the neck mini-hummer nut never could come to terms with the bridge being REAL bright and clean. I don't know why Gibson never made a guitar with a mini in the neck and a full 'bucker in the bridge. It just doesn't have all that dark woofy thang goin' that a neck 'bucker does. I saw a low budj Epi semi hollow single cut like that once, but never a production Gibbo.

I had the same experience..matter of fact bought that guitar with my dad on 48th street..he insisted on coming with me so I wouldn't get ripped off...didn't know jack about guitars.. After I saw Dicky Betts with GS in Passaic NJ.I had to have the big Buckers...the mini 's were just not doing it. Who knew they;d be worth something...not that it matters much anyhow. I was 17 I think...Had I known that Leslie West was using P90's I may have gone that route but Dicky and Dan were just smokin'.. Just like when I saw you in West Palm Beach around '98??? Knew I had to get a Z someday after that..Like I said ...No regrets...I still havnt found a LP I like as much.

Hey Frank, that Dangerous Dan Toler sho' is dangerous. Saw him w/ Gregg once in Big D, and at a blues joint (Blue Cat Blues, also in Dallas) doin' jam night, of all thangs. 'burst thru a Marshall w/ JBL's, that Macon/J'ville Allman tone. Derek trucks has it too, with no Marshall, just a Super Reverb. It's in the blood I guess. (just ain't in MINE ;^)

I don't know where it exactly comes from, but some of the lead tones on ABB's Live at the Fillmore East sound almost like a blues harp being run through a pushed tube amp! That sound gives me goosebumps. Betts' solo on "One Way Out" sounds like that.

Doing a jam night? BW I would have loved to have heard the two of you trading off...In the blood, no doubt...DT is crazy good. Think JChance will ever tell us if he likes the pick-ups or did we scare him off? And 1962Tele...I still have those mini-hums you like if you still want to rout our your '55. They dont squeal. I hear Brent Mason likes them too. I would't though...that guitar might be worth somethin...decisions, decisions...I made 'em a bit quicker when I was 17. Jason do you like them or not? End the madness!!!!

I need serious counselling here, boys. OR you could just send it to me....probably cheaper than counselling in the long run! Funny thing, my mother is a psychotherapist!

End the madness!!!! I've been quiet because I haven't picked my guitar up from the shop yet. Been in & out of town this week, and plan on getting it in the next couple of days. As soon as I get it, I'll do some clips. As far as the mini's go, I've always dug 'em. My dad had a '72 Deluxe that he bought new, until a few years ago... Sold it like a dumba$$....LOL He used it on the Barefoot Jerry records, and then the Jimmy Buffett stuff as well. Cool tone, but I guess I just always had it in my head, so it never bugged me like it does some of you. Mason's mini is his "signature" neck pickup tone you hear on all the country ballads. It's in that primer coated old Tele of his, and I think it's in the Valley Arts model, too.
