Hi all, I own a 2006 Eric Johnson signature strat that I have had for a few months now. When I got the guitar, it needed a setup. Even after the setup though, when sliding on the high e-string in some spots (noteably from the 10-12th fret, and from the 15th-17th fret), the slide sounds out of tune, and the ending note ends up sounding slightly out of tune for a bit. It almost sounds like a slight micro bend. Also, when playing fast licks leading up to the e-string, the e-string notes sound slightly out of tune as well. This is when the guitar is fully tuned. Tonight I tested it against 3 other guitars, and none of them did this. When fretting the 17th fret on the high e-string, placing a normal amount of pressure to fret the note will make it micro bend. It is very sensitive. NONE of the other guitars I have do this. I am sort of bummed out, as I have heard that some EJ's have problems from the factory, and I am wondering if this is a permanent issue or a fixable one. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks for reading!........-Matt-

I have dealt with them in the past, and have had very satisfactory results. The guys at the CS take GREAT pride in their stuff, and want you to be happy.. Other than that, you might want to take it to a luthier that you trust and have him check it out. I'm sure this has been zero help to you, I just wanted to share some of your grief..... Trock....

Trock, thanks for the sympathy. I posted on the Fender forum to see what kind of response I get there. I am starting to think that the nitro on the neck is making my finger stick when I do the slides, and that may have something to do with it, but it still doesn't explain the extra sensitive 17th fret. I will keep you guys updated, but for now anyone with any info feel free to chime in!

with all things being equal (good intonation, guitar tuned up, etc.), check your pickup heights. if they are too close they'd pull the strings down and make them sound a little strange (wobbly pitch, notes out of tune, strange decay of notes, among other things). you'd notice this the most on the wound strings.

I agree with mudskippers suggestion too with pup height possibly high .
