So, this one just sort of came out of no where.
For a while, I've been sort of pondering options for a cool axe to add to the arsenal. Basically, some type of nice, higher end Lester-type. Been surfing the net and talking to folks about different options. Have considered Gibson stuff, PRS, Baker, you know... The usual suspects.
But after talking to a friend, I decided to check this out:
peavey.com/products/browse.cfm/action/detail/item/113490/number/00530830/cat/260/HP%3F+Signature+USA+Custom.cfm
I'll tell you what- I just got it today, but first impressions are that this will probably be a keeper.
Cause, ya' know, I've dogged Peavey as much as anybody. They've certainly been the butt of a lot of jokes amoung musicians.
But this guitar is a real axe. And I don't mean, like "decent" in a "Peavey kind of way." It's a very cool design, and is obviously designed to compete with the PRS-types out there.
I'll give a more thorough review when I've had some real gig time with it. But initially I can tell you that neck is really comfy. It's a nice blend of vintage and modern. Not too skinny, but nice and wide with very acceptable string spacing. And the bulk of the neck has just enough girth to feel like a real guitar, as opposed to an ultra-thin, ultra- flat shred machine.
The custom Peavey pickups are really unique, tonally speaking. Vintage-style Les Paul output, but a touch more airy and open. Not quite as much low-mid chunk, which actually makes it a bit more versatile. The cleans are really nice & detailed.
And so far, the workmanship is top-notch. Everything looks like what you'd expect from a Custom Shop guitar.
I'll do some sound clips with my Z's tomorrow and post some more thoughts. In the mean time, here are a couple of pics I just snapped of mine. Note that the pickups in mine are black with gold "binding" as opposed to creme on the website above. Not sure if it's an option, or if it's something they've changed. The black looks nice, too. Also comes with a really nice faux alligator skin brown case.
