I don't own one, but have worked on two different ones for people who purchased them. VERY nice, but over $5 G and that separates a few folks!

I've got 2 ( don't ask ) of the 2004 deluxe 50th Strats . Fender did an excellent job with those . Yo Yo Yo.........had a 50th.....sold it..... Bought American deluxe parts off e-bay.........Mucho, Mucho, Mucho happier..... Not doggin' the 50'th........But...IMHO.....Fender didn't get it right with that one.....I f'n LOVED it in the store...(Charlotte N.C......Plugged into an old Ampeg Reverb Rocket)).......But......When I got it home and played thru my stuff.....(70's vintage Marshall, Mesa Lonestar Special, Carr Mercury, etc....)......it just didn't have what I perceive to be to be the quintessential STRAT tone......... Went on E-Bay the next F'n day.......Got more than I paid for it BTW;......... Like I said.....the parts-caster is the sweetest STRAT i have ever owned.......(and that's been a bunch of 'em)...Again....All Fender parts tho.......from the body to the bridge and tuners.....ALL Fender....... However, I have the satisfaction of knowing I wired it and put it together MYSELF....PRICELESS......... I don't to want piss any one off that owns a 50'th strat...just MHO.........

I really like the neck and the overall feel and fit of these guitars. Probably the only downside is the noisless cobalts , not the greatest of pups in a Strat but I find them usable for now. I'll proabaly get a drop in pickguard loaded with some type of pups I like better at some point and keep the rest original . I can probably sell it for big $$'s when I turn 90 and retire . ;D

Which one are you guys talking about? There's only one true Anniversary, and that's the one they painstakingly duplicated off the '54. It cost around 5G. If you're talking about that Noiseless PU'd pretender, well then hell yea, you're going to be disappointed, but you got what you paid for!

It's fitted with all the modern Deluxe Strat features plus a few extras .

I remember reading about the 54 dupe as tele62 stated as the limited production, all orders in by certain date, signed by luthier, special case, etc etc. Don't remember if it was the fender site or maybe guitar player mag. I know I've seen lesser priced tribute models since then in magazines but not of the caliber of the 4995.00 model

I would not put $5000 into a custom series limited edition whatever because it will not be played . OK for a collector if that's what you are into and you have pockets full of money .

Why wouldn't you play that guitar?

Why wouldn't you play that guitar? Why ? too much to put into a "player". When these limited edition models are released in the upper price bracket they are for the collector , not the player . Would you feel comfortable leaving your $5000 54 RI up on stage ? I know a lot of guys who have gigged and come home with one less guitar or had a drunk get up on stage and damage thier equipment . Guitars are ment to be played in my opinion . I have the 50th Deluxe Strat which to some may be a collectable ( to others a POS ) but for what they sold for at the time ( around $1400 ) they were not over priced and have one of the nicest necks I've had on a Strat . That one is a "player" and that is the reason I purchased that guitar . Would I play one of these $5000 CS 54's...sure just to try one but to buy one to play ?.....no thanks , I can buy 2 or 3 real nice players for 5 grand and they won't be sitting in a case because I don't want to scratch it !!

Hawk, those '54's come with a checked finish, two great cases and all the "playability" I've ever seen after over 30 years of working on new and vintage instruments, including ones from the 50's and 60's. Awesome work by Fender CS, and about the 5G?? That's pretty close to an inflation adjusted price from the 50's. Fenders were considered very expensive back then as well, and not everyone could afford to play them. Good guitars are meant to be played. I don't understand how a dummied down guitar is more of a "player". "Cause it's cheap and you can afford to have it stolen? Why would stealing a "player" be a better thing? Here's a tip for how to keep guitars from being stolen, and it's worked for me for 30 years, even in the worst bars: Bouncers are too busy to look after your guitar's security. Find a good sized dude or him and two of his buddies that are near the front table or row. You're being paid to play, so it's not a big deal to throw a Jackson on their table, and say" Boys, nice to see you out tonight...I'd like to trade you favors. I'm buying your table a round of drinks. Make sure NO ONE gets near my gear, OK? If some #&%% steals our stuff, I wouldn't want the three guys I bought a drink for to be sitting there watching it happen!" Sounds stupid maybe, and I'll even admit it might. But in 30 years plus, NEVER anything stolen. Tip two: Don't screw off and leave your stuff unless another band member is covering you while you take a leak, etc. What's so hard about that? I'd never buy that '54 as a collector. I'd play it. It's a player. Just a better one! What I might leave at home is a 1958 Stratocaster or my 1962 Strat or the old "55 Telecaster. Why? Cause they're old, and travel is harder on them than it used to be. They're seniors! Those, my friend, qualify as collector items to some. The 1954 Limited is one very good recreation of history, and a wonderful player. Time will tell if it's a "collector". So far, the prices are NOT going up, so I'm having doubts, but time will sort that out as well. Just trying to be pragmatic here fellas, and I love guitars too!

I don't know if travel is older on vintage guitars , cars or whatever as long as they are in sound condition and protected properly . My 58 Chev Impala coupe I restored never had trouble travelling long trips or pulling a vintage cedar strip boat . I've been lucky never to have anything stolen and I usually had my stuff watched .
I'm not trying to get into a mud slinging match here and I have no doubt a $5K 54 CS Strat is a fantastic guitar , I just wouldn't feel to comfortable playing one out nor would I spend that on a Guitar , vintage , CS or whatever . I've always put my spending limit at around $2000 ( usually buy used ) and have found many fine guitars at or below that price range . I honestly doubt if you would see many guys using a 54 CS for regular gigging , might be a few but i'm sure most are safely tucked away by collector types . That's my take on it .

Fenders were considered very expensive back then as well, and not everyone could afford to play them. Actually it's not even close. According to the CPI, $249 (The original price of a Strat in 1954) is equivalent to $1864 today.

Really? Ok, I'll accept that! So Custom Shop pricing on lets say a "Time Machine" isn't that far off then from the old production pricing.
Yea, Hawk...I understand what you're saying and totally respect it. Some are comfortable playing those things out, and some arent. And I very much like what you did with the old Impala. You drove it and looked after it. Sounds like it served you well.
To me the '54 is nicely done, and plays better than most production guitars. And no, you're right, I don't think I would bring the '58 Strat to a lot of gigs anymore, but compared to what it's allegedly worth, that silly '54 is a cheapo!
Then again, you probably could get some nice dollars for that '58 Implala, too. I'm sure not saying I understand all this vintage craze completley, but watching Barrett Jackson Auctions makes me think that this whole thing with cars and guitars is out of control!

TV sets were $400 back then! That was a lot of money to watch 2 or 3 stations that were only on from about 7:00am to 10:00pm.

That's right Billy, and I remember those days. Here's another point perhaps on that '54 RI. I've worked on two of them, and they're put together better than the ones from the mid 50's, and so they should be. The 50's Strats were production model guitars, assembled best they could with quality controls being arbitrary to some degree. Also the '54 Ann. is a Masterbuilt, signed instrument.
I was a Fender dealer in the 70's, and we were chatting with a factory rep back in the day, and he came up with the conclusion that if Leo had handbuilt and signed Tele's and Strats, production would have been so low, and demand so high that those guitars that did get built would have been $500 plus. case included for a mid 50's Stratocaster. Now it would be Masterbuilt 50's vs Masterbuilt 2004, and closer to the 5G. Throw in another hardshell case on the 50's MB, and we've got equity.
