I got my Maz 8 back from the shop yesterday. It was upgraded with the new transformer that was designed especially for the Maz 8. the amp realy sounds fantanstic, even better than before. I also got a brake lite so at 2 clicks on the brake, master volume at noon and main volume at 3 o'clock it get this great, crunchy overdrive that is very crisp and tight, not overly saturated but its there and it really drives! thanks Doc for hooking me up with such a great amp, it is so perfect or what I do at church and I can even go bang hard with my buddies too when I switch over the pentode mode church guys, you need one of these, its worth every penny!!!! What was wrong with the OEM transformer??? Was it faulty?? Does yours have the Blue speaker?? How much clean headroom will this amp produce???

I did not have any issues with my original tranny but some did so Doc redesigned it and replaced mine. Both of them worked great for me.
My amp has the blue in it. I get really nice cleanish sounds up to about noon on my amp, if I leave it in pentode mode, with the brake lite at zero and the master up past noon its pretty loud.
Once you get the volume up past around 11 o'clock you start getting more and more hair your signal, noon starts to go from hair to OD, 1 o'oclock on starts getting real fun but not much louder.

Todd,
What serial number is yours?
Mine is #12 and I'm wondering if a change-up is called for. Mine sounds incredible as it is but I know what the right tweaky-bits can do, especially with an expert behind them :-)

Good Day Z-bros, I had to send my 8 back to the shop about 6 weeks ago. Brent emailed me and asked me to send it back to them as they has some "upgrades" they wanted to do. I had a problem with my 8 when I first got it. The EL84 was frying after an hour or so of playing. It came back within a week and has preformed flawlessly ( the amp flawless, sadly not my playing). Anyway, I never asked what was done to my 8. I wonder if I got the new tranny? All I know is that my 8 is working great and I love her more each time I plug in. I have a Blonde Head Maz 8 # 32002. Happy pickin' to ya'll.

That I did. :-) Mine is one of the few and goes back as soon as I pack it up. There is one more out there and all will be upgraded. Mine has one of the particularly robust tubes in it, so it sounds and works great - but it's still gonna get the better-matched transformer.

My blonde studio is #32020 and I called Brent at Dr Z today and he explained that only the first eight or so had the older transformer. He said the gold tape around the transformer (on the far left side from the back) should have "5801" if you have the latest upgrade. I verified mine has it. I hope that helps anyone that was confused (like me).

good information on the marking on the transformer, need to write that down for future reference although it sounds like they have all been replaced

not quite - as of last week one to go.
And mine is still out, tho I'll probably get it back next week sometime. Brent promised a speedy turnaround, tho I know well how events can conspire!
