OK guys, You know I'm not that big on 'clips' in general 'cause the beauty of the electric guitar is that we all sound different on the same rig. That said, yesterday I had a little time after a session to record a variety of audio clips with the MAZ 8 and 2 different guitars to try to demonstrate the different sounds available with the Pentode/Triode and EQ Bypass. I put 'em on a page on my website. Check it out if you like. ericambel.com/gear/dr-z-maz-8-w-audio-clips/

nice clips Eric, I like how you demo'd each setting with the same guitar, gives a nice idea how the pentode/triode sound and feel
nice job on the recordings too, sounds great!

Thanks guys. I'm going to do another round in a similar manner with some cleaner sounds. May take me a couple weeks. Going out of town on a project.

That'd be cool. I know sound is subjective and everyone hears it different, but for some reason seeing that royer in front of the amp makes the demo much more believable...

To me the recorded sound of a ribbon mic 6" from the outside middle of the speaker is what I hear when I listen to the amp. If I was recording this for a record I would have used the Telefunken 72 pre amp which is more colored but I wanted the clips to be close to 'natural' sounding (hence the full pre mixed bottom)

BIG sounding. I'd love to hear the MAZ 8 in a track!

This brings up a question - maybe for another forum... But do you have any tips for recording guitars/amps? Mainly something us home recording guys can use. Sorry for the hijack...

Thanks everybody. I wish I was a little better w the web stuff.
Jesslm02, I like ribbons the best for recording electric guitar. Most ribbon mics are figure 8 pattern so the pick up from the front and the back. They don't have the "Proximity" effect of most dynamics (meaning they don't have extra bottom when they are within 2" of the sound source). Ribbons give a natural sound and to me they come alive when they are 6 to 9 inches away from the source. I personally think it's better to get a good sound out of 1 mic than to try to combine mics. Combining mics is very tricky and it can sound good when they are soloed but when you are putting them into a 'record' with a drum set, bass, a couple other guitars and some keys and vocals I like to work with one mic on an electric guitar. If I was putting this guitar into a track I'd probably compress it a little with either an opto compressor or an 1176 and I'd see if it needed any eq at that point. I like to print a little heavy on the bottom cause it's easier to take away later than add. Ribbons are also a little easier to EQ. I know the Royer's are a little expensive but there are a lot of affordable ribbons out there now. Some that can be upgraded or modded.

Eric's advise is like money in the bank! He makes his living recording and making amps sound great!
