I bought this guitar a while back and it is about the best sounding Tele I've ever played. It totally rocks. But the guitar was a special order for a guy who liked that wide flat neck thing going on. He wimped out before the guitar came in and bought something else, and I ended up with his special. I'm having a terrible time getting used to that neck. I thought it wouldn't be such a big deal - but every time I play it I just struggle with it. By the end of a night, I'm ready to sell it. But then I listen to it and try again. I asked the store if I could send it back and have Don put a narrower neck on it, but they said the neck pocket was built for this neck and it would introduce all sorts of compromises. That sounds logical. So what can I do, short of selling it and getting something else? Any ideas? Here's the subject of the discussion:

Hey ben, You've got some good luthiers out your way. Call the guys at www.usacustomguitars.com/. I know they take custom orders and they are very helpful. If you know the measurement for the pocket they can tell you your best options. DougG

Steve, I'd drop Don an email stateing exactly what is in your post here, no one will know better than him.
Good luck, been there..ended up selling a killer sounding G&L ASAT for similar reasons.

IS it the width or the radius thats giving you problems? Well it's both actually. It's considerably wider than my strat, and that's got to be a 15" radius or flatter. If my hands were just a tad larger...

Well I got an answer back from Don on this guitar. The neck is too wide to replace. So... I either have to get used to it as is, or sell/trade it for something that fits me better. I hate to sell it, but it sure is hard for me to play - I have really small hands. Someone who has big hands would probably love this thing...

Man I hate to hear that for you. The neck is my hang up point on a guitar, I love it or not, I can swap pick ups or whatever, deal with a heavy weight, but the neck MUST work for me or it's "Adios".

Yep. That's where I'm coming from too. I hate to divest this rig, but someone who has big hands will probably totally appreciate the way it's set up. And besides, there are a bazillion Tele's out there that are well within the price tag of this one that will work great for me.

Why couldn't it be defretted, tapered down from the neck joint, to the head, fingerboard re-radiused, and finally refretted? Man that's a lot of work, looks like consign or ebay. There's bound to be somebody, somewhere that wants just such a thing. There's a thread going on right now on TGP about the virtues of big leg women, DOH!, I mean big neck guitars.

Benttop--
I'd say bite the bullet and let her go. Imo, good tone is easier to achieve than good feel.
IOW, there's a good chance that you'll be able to find one that sounds as good or better, and almost 100% chance that you'll find one whose feel you like more.

I am with Hohn 100% on this one. A good comfortable neck is the key for me.

Well I'm going to give it another go. I set the action about as low as I dare, and it's a bit better. I tend to like my action a bit on the high side, so this is different, but as it turns out, selling a guitar that sounds as good as this one is against my religion! ;D
