Has anyone noticed Wallmart is now stocking ghs and gibson strings? They are selling them so cheap that all the guitarshops are pissed. less than 4 bucks a set. Please do not buy your strings there, rather support a local store of your choice. And whats up with those "First Act 'Guitars they stock. I got one of their callenders in the mail, they would have you believe that its everybodys "go to "guitar. Does anyone own a First Act?

Apparently First Act has the cheapies and a Custom Shop. I have that calendar too. I don't know who any of the guys are in the calendar, except Rick Nielsen. They all look well built.

It is unfortunate that these companies go " big box " to sell thier products but in this day and age companies seem more concerned about sales numbers than supporting the little guy .
By chance are these made in China ?? It is possable that these are an offshore produced and packaged product that looks much the same as the made in USA strings .

And then again, I played a Chinese made Yamaha the other day, and it was built awesome with fabulous dlectronics! It didn't sound as nice acoustically as a $3200 Taylor, but it was a third the price. It played WAY nicer than the Taylor however, and have no idea what that's worth. Watch these Chinese...they work cheap, so they can put a lot of time into these things.
Never thought I'd see the day...but then again 25 years ago we were calling Japanese guitars and cars crap, and now one of my favorite Teles is a CIJ, and I drive a Lexus.

My son works at First Act's new boutique music store in Boston. They have hired local luthiers to build high end guitars. They've made guitars for Paul Westerberg and Joe Perry among others. I played one that retails for around 8 grand! It's gorgeous and plays great. They also have their inexpensive Chinese guitars that you see in Walmart. I played a $275 guitar that was quite impressive.

What section of Walmart do they have the guitars in, as I haven't seen any musical instruments there before?

I actually saw an add for First Act in a guitar mag, with this guy who plays and tours w/ pop stars that I'm not personally fond of (I don't remember any names right now). His axe is pretty sweet though. It's like a Gretch with lots of flame maple and a orange/black sunburst.

I've no problems buying from Wally World.
That said, I've had exceptional support and service from the "little guys" I've worked with.
Value is more than just a low price. So many people these days don't know the difference between value and price!
I believe it's VERY possible to get ripped off on something that's $5, and get a screaming deal on something that's $50K.
VALUE!-- how do YOU define it?

Is this the same first Act that sells the stack in a box and tweedy pedals?

actually it is. I hear those work great for recording directly into a console or for a tube emulator w/ solid state amps

The rep for First act came by the store I work at to show us the "custom shop" First Acts. Kinda cool designs, but I found them to be too sloppy for the price they ask for them. To me, they have lots of "Luthier school project" flaws in them. Of course, the rep didn't want to hear about the criticism. He just went on and on about how Brad Whitford loves them!! Brad Whitford...I mean, I love his playing, some of the cool Aerosmith licks are actually him, not Perry, but this guy will have his picture taken with ANYBODY'S guitars!!! These guys are asking prices in the Anderson/Grosh/Suhr/PRS ranges and believe me, the First Acts are nowhere the quality of the long standing boutique guys. He went on and on about how many guys in the First Act shop came from Gibson. I think that says it all......

The First Act Rep said, "we'll do any crazy idea anybody can come up with, that's how 'passionate' we are" I guess they 'passionately' have no problem making some of the stupidest looking guitars around!

Passion?
Sound like they have no original ideas, and instead want their customers to come up with the ideas FOR them!
B Whitford WILL put his pic with anything or anyone. Photo prostitute:)

whos the biggest endorsment hoar?Billy gibbons? Joe Walsh? There was a time when Joe had his name on about anything made. Brad has his name on alot of stuff right now.Its one thing if they really use the stuff and then are approached, but that isnt always the case.

The guy who I was seeing on EVERYTHING for awhile was Johnny Hiland... I won't call him any names for it, but I swear I couldn't turn a page in VG or Guitar Player without seeing a cable, a speaker, or a capo without his smiling face hovering somewhere around it...
No smites, PLEASE.... Heck of a player and he's entitled to make his money. But maaaan...
