Which would you choose?
I may be purchasing another guitar here shortly and it has come down to these two. I can get the PRS for a price that's not (too much) higher than the EJ strat new. So price really isn't an issue here. This will be a second guitar (toy) and I'm looking for something to go with my 67 Vinatge Deluxe Player Telecaster reissue. However, this will be my last guitar purchase for a long, long time. I mainly play indie rock stuff that may veer into slightly heavier tones. Radiohead or Death Cab For Cutie would be good examples of the sounds I might use.
So do I go with a really nice Strat in the EJ or do I get the PRS Hollowbody for an entirely different flavor from the Tele? I have played and like both, for different reasons obviously.

IMO and it's just that, if the PRS is good, then it's more guitar for the $$. The EJ, is OK, but just OK. I thought I'd really like it when it came out...played two of them, and it's sort of Blahhh...here's another Strat. Played the '54 Anniversary Stratocaster ( the real one) and totally different. Completely gorgeous guitar, tone and feel. I vote for the PRS.

That's a tough one. They are such different animals. I would like to hear people's experiences with the PRS though. I'm intrigued with the hollow body, just wondering how versatile it is. Can you get a decent jazz sound and a decent high gain sound? I've thought about selling my 1990 Custom 24 and getting one but the Custom's such a great guitar. Too many choices, not enough money.

I don't have any personal experience but a friend of mine who has and has had many fine archtops told me that when the fully hollow thick PRS came out he tried one and said it wasn't even close. This guy is a real purist so he may have been exagerating a bit. I always wanted to try a thick one myself but could never spend the money on one. Recently I was very impressed the the Eastman jazz guitars, for the money.

I've had a lot of experience with both the PRS Archtop and the PRS Hollowbody series, having owned two of them. I found that I liked the sound of the Archtop better than the Hollowbody series. The Archtop with a Duncan Antiquity pickup set was one of the best jazz sounds I have ever had. Unfortunalely I thought the guitar sounded far better with unpotted pickups than with potted ones. So I could not really use a lot of drive or it would feedback making it not so versatile. It still would feedback with potted pickups if I was using a fair bit of drive. The Hollowbody series is very comparable to an es-335. My ear seems to favor an ES-335 over the PRS Hollowbody though. I wanted both of them as a McCarty replacement but in the end got rid of them. GaryH I would totally keep the Custom24. I still find their solid bodies to be the best. Their hollowbodies unless you find a jem, are a little lacking. I played a few good ones though. Redwirerighttemple, go with your gut. Which ever one moves you more.

I've played 1/2 dozen or so EJ Strats and DO NOT care for them......but I'm not a PRS fan either agter owning (and selling) two.
All depends on the features you desire...and as Arun said Gut...always follow your gut.

I can't say on the EJ Strat but I stay away from the signature series Strats anyway . On the PRS.....one word if you are going to be in a situation where the amp is cranked and even then not that much...FEEDBACK !! I tried one for a couple weeks and returned it for a solid body custom 22 . The hollow body design also felt flimsy to me and something I would be worried that it would not stand up too well . Best to go with a semi like a 335 that has the solid centre block. Heritage 535's are killer with the PAF's in it .

I'm not a fan of most PRS guitars but the Hollowbody I had a chance to play was an exceptional guitar with more real, rich guitar tone than most bigger jazz boxes. Given a shot at one for a good price I'd be sorely tempted. Good luck.

a second vote for the Heritage. It's my main "throwaround" guitar, and it's a very good value. Their value is rising every year. Of course, too much gain=feedback, but its pretty controllable.

man........every EJ strat I have played in the store was UNPLAYABLE.........probably played about 6 total at this point. If I bought one, I'd probably drop a new set of frets in it............I have had the same experience with 52 reissue "gym floor" Teles. JMO, but, its easy to get caught up in the hype of "vintage looks"
I say if you found one that really plays well and has some Mojo, then go for it.

I have a few PRS models in my collections, early PRS are better than the later one,IMO.Their best ones are the early Cust 24 models pre CNC,pre 1995.Some early arch tops are also nice. I have played EJ and did not care for it .IMO,the Amer Delux 50th anv. is more versitile and comfortable to play. The bottom line is ,if PRS hollowbody is a bargain, then get it ,because they have a good resale value if you decide later on that is not the guitar for you. There are plenty of EJ out there right now,and you will come across a good deal .That is just my opinion only.

I do have a '52 RI Tele thoght that's a killer, of course it's been tweaked, the previous owner had the neck stripped, reradioused to 9.5, jumbo fret wite, toug oil finish front and back, an old stacked Duncan bridge pup w/o tone control, it's a smokin' axe, it's the one in my Avatar and even after buying the $2100 Anderson I gigged the '52, 'til the wife and the band mates gave me so much grief for driving 9 hours in a day (draggin' the wife along) and paying all that $$ and not playing it !
