The PRS said shipping was 167GBP. So what's that, about $330 US to ship?

That's a ridiculous amount for shipping. Looks like that's where they're making their money.

A PRS or LP Custom for $50 is a SCAM no matter how much the shipping is. Not to mention it's from China. You would be better served to just put the money under your pillow and wait for the Les Paul fairy.

Against my advice, a friend bought one of the black Les Paul Custom knockoffs for around $300 delivered. Received it midwestern USA within a week. Played it at a gig the night he received it. The following week after a pro setup and a better set of pickups it was improved to the point that he now rotates taking it out with the 3 authentic Lesters he owns. He actually prefers the "Grover" tuners on the Chinese one. From where I sit at FOH mix, I can't tell the difference visually or aurally.
He may have just gotten an exceptional one. The binding where the headstock joins is oddly fitted and the pickguard has a flat finish which gives it away if you look closely. The inlay and binding are even "aged".
I have seen some gawd-awful looking ones with mis-shapen headstocks and crooked inlay blocks, though. I still wouldn't buy one for myself regardless. What bothers me most is that they brand them "Made in USA" with a Gibson-looking serial number on the back of the headstock. Twenty years from now it will only add to the confusion of a prospective buyer - aside from the more obvious legal issues..

I think he used to play with the Village People.
