The other guitar player in my band is playing a pretty new LP standard with Burstbucker pickups in it. The guitar has been set up and we have tried it through multiple amps with every EQ you could imagine, and we cannot get the thing to sound good. Are these just horrible pickups? I have heard so much from Gibson about how great these are, and I couldn't be less impressed with them.

I have always HATED the tone of burstbuckers. If you have heard a few real PAF's you know they are inconsistant as !@#$. I guess Gibson copied some real bad ones. I would try a set Rio Grande Humbuckers, they really cook. Put a Genuine Texas Humbucker in the front and a BBQ in the rear and hold on.

I'm not exactly sure what your experiencing, but...
Burstbuckers come in different flavors. I don't know what they are putting in the newer Standard models.
I have a Gary Moore LP. These are the first Gibson guitars that came with Burstbuckers. They are a bit on the 'dark' side.
In my case, they do exactly what they are intended for. They put me in Gary Moore 'blues rock' territory with ease. So, if you're into that sort of tone you'll like them.
When I want to do something different, like maybe ABB or some other classic stuff, then I turn to my LP with Seymour Duncan's ('59 and JB).
If you've already experimented with different pickup heights, I'd suggest trying different tone caps. Worth a try before buying a set of expensive pickups, IMO.

Sam Hey Sama, I'm thinking about getting some of those for my LP Special. I love my Muy Grandes in my Tele. What kind of tones can I expect?

I have a newer Les Paul that came with the Burstbucker Pro Pickups. Alnico 5 Double Wax Potted. I liked the tone but decided that I wanted something closer to the classic Les Paul sound. Decided on WCR Crossroads with Solid Nickel Silver Covers. I also upgraded the electronics with an RS Guitar Works upgraded 50's production wiring kit. Great articulate clear tone from this combination. So my vote would be for WCRs and RSGW kits depending on what you are looking for tone wise. I am sure that Jim at WCR and Roy at RSGW would be glad to help you get the tone you are looking for.

I bought a pre-production Burstbucker 2 and put it in the neck of my Les Paul, and I similarly was not impressed. It was quite muddy there. I replaced it and the bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Jimmy Page set, and they are simply awesome.
I've been itching to try Bare Knuckle pickups....I've always heard good things. Soon I'm going to try a set of Black Dogs in my V because the pickups in there are garbage, and I want to get a set of Stormy Mondays for my Heritage. Still would love to try the Mississippi Queen or a regular P-90 model as well. They are pricey though.
