Anyone out there in Z-land have a Fender Crafted in Japan Telecaster? I am looking for a nice Tele to round out my collection, I have Strats and LPs but never owned a Tele. I am looking at the new fender americian reissue '52 teles but have seen a few of the (C.I.J.) crafted in Japan models on ebay and I remebered a made in japan reissue strat a friend had years ago that was a great guitar and if the Teles play like that one I would go for it. I plan on replacing the pick-ups regardless so they are not an issue. Fell free to chime in if you know of a great Tele that can be had for under $1500. Mark

It's not a Japan model but I did just pick up a Fender Telecaster 69' Reissue Thinline and I absolutely LOVE it!!! It's a semi-hollow Tele with an F-Hole that gives it a unique sound and man is it light! I was playing an Epiphone Les Paul, which was like playing a box of bricks (weight-wise). I got the natural wood finish and it is beautiful. The fretboard is a little slick, which took some getting used to, but it plays great and I will probably never get rid of it after having it. I think I payed around $700 - $800 for it. I was also considering the Telecaster Nashville Power at the same time. I REALLY liked this one too. It has a Tex-Mex Strat pickup between two Tex-Mex Tele pickups. The 5-way Strat-o-Tone, as they call it, allows you to get an acoustic sound from this Tele. Pretty cool feature. This one was actually cheaper but in the end I got the Thinline Tele because the Nashville is just as heavy as the Les Paul (because of the active pickup requiring a battery pack I guess). I'll probably end up getting one some day anyways if my wife will let me Hope this info helps a little.

Try some fine steel wool on the maple fingerboard. Just enough to knock the shine off. You'll have to do it every so often. Keep the fibers away from the pickups!

I had..and sold on this forum, a CIJ '62 RI Tele, outstading guitar, most of them are, swap the electronics and you'll have a first rate guitar.
BUT, the newest '52 RI american Tele's I've played have been great, and a decent shop should sell you one for about $1275 + tax. so your in the ballpark. I have a 1997 '52 RI and it is a great fiddle but mo heavy than the later ones I've played.
Plus..Buddy and 'ol Milsap signed the back.....so it's got the Mojo !!

Oh...and like Billy said, 0000 steel wool and a lil baby powder worked in to your neck and fret board will loosen thangs right up..make it feel like a nice old worn in one..... but PLEASE put masking tape across your pick ups before you even get close with the steel wool......trust me on this one.

Along with the steel wool, I put danish oil on my rosewood and ebony fingerboards about once a year (as recommended by the manufactures). If you live in a dry area and the wood begins to look a little dry, you may need to do it more often. If you can't find danish oil, many peopl use lemon oil.

Try some Clarinet Bore Oil sold in music stores. It's made specifically for Ebony (which tends to dry and crack), but works VERY well for rosewood as well. Maple isn't porous enough to really soak it up, so you'll probably want to "wipe on, wipe off"

I like the CIJ's and MIJ's very much. The build integrity and attention to detail in my experience is better than MIM's. However, I will say this. For a bit more $$, a Fender Custom Shop '62 is a stellar guitar, and stands up to my original very, very well. And it's 11G less to buy, and that's a ton of cash!!

Wow, thanks to everybody for the great advice on the slick fretboard! Another topic that caught my attention was switching out the pickups. I'm not experienced enough to know which ones I should be looking at. I'm a HUGE Brad Paisley fan and love his sound (I know his Dr. Z amps have a lot to do with that too), so can anyone recommend some pickups for that twangy yet subtle crunchy sound that comes from Brad?

Hey telefan24, I have 1999 Fender 52 RI. I would highly recommend you consider a set of Bill Lawrence tele pups. www.billlawrence.com/ The 280-TN and the 298-TL. This set will cost you a little over $100.00 delivered. Killer tone and no 60 cycle hum. Also may want to consider a set of titanium compensated saddles. Good luck! Rick
