Ok..gigged her Sat., thought I'd just open with it then revert to the 'ol Tele...nope..did not happen, the sustain and pinch harmonics were too much fun Played a lot less notes and just let 'em ring/hang. Sweetness with the Sr vol on 3:00, master noon and airbraked on 2.

I see by the pic it's missing the plastic knob for the pickup selector.
Heck, it's worthless now. I think you need to trade it to me for sumpin'.
I got a 70's Morley wha pedal? That sounds fair.

I know a guy who took a Tom Murphy '58 reissue that was reliced already, put old worn skinny frets in it, real PAFs, real 50s tuners and other hardware, an actual 50s case and sold it for $14K at an Arlington show. He had placed it out in the sun a lot and it even faked out the guys with blacklights. He asked me to watch his booth for an hour or so while he took a break. He didn't tell me about this guitar. While he was gone a guy with a heavy NY accent asked to see the Les Paul. I said I didn't see one. He said the one under the table and pointed at it. I said okay and got it out for him to look at. He said it was the best '58 he had ever seen and was practically drooling. When my friend came back I asked him about it. He was having a blast letting all the so called experts go nuts over it. The funny thing is none of them noticed the new serial number! He didn't volunteer anything just let them look and opine about it. Naturally he did disclose what it was to the guy that bought it. Probably the best relic there could ever be and I feel was a bargain for what it is.

Great story Billy, This is a great fiddle, traded blind and took a chance, have not had a Lester in a Long time that I liked, I've had a bunch, this one may stay around. IF i COULD AFFORD IT i WOULD DO THE 50'S HARDWARE THANG ON THIS ONE...whoops hit cap lock !!!!

What a treat to see, Billy! After all the forum letters on Mexican strats and how to try and get something out of those things for tone, and then you come up with this! God bless your trade, and you for showing a real guitar to an older guy who still remembers!

Fellas..
The R-dash-whatever is confusing as heck to a guy like me who doesn't follow all the latest Gibson stuff.
Where can I get a primer on what's what in the LP world?
My gramps has a SWEET LP that will almost surely be mine someday, but I dunno how old it is. I've been told it's a RI, but an EARLY reissue.
He's been offered stupid amounts of money for the guitar, but I suspect it's people who are thinking it's an ORIGINAL vintage LP.
I think his is one of the first batch of '59 reissues.
Any weblinks to help get me up to speed on the LP sinec 1967 or so? I've never had much interest in them, as I always loved them but thought them overpriced.

Honh, google the Les Paul Forum, there are some bvonafied Lester notz there. The earliest "ReIssue" '59 was the '80 or '81 "Heritage".....prior to all the Reissue that surround us today. They are valuable, but not more so than the say '99 to present "59 RI.
The R- = R for reissue, the a numeral for the ending digit of the year model in represents; R-8 is a '58 reissue, R-6= 1956 reissue, etc. The ones with Brazilian rosewood fretboards draw rediculous $$$ IMO. If you can get your mits on Gramps Lester get the serial number and go to the Gibson site and the Les Paul forum for answers.
Later, Curt

I'm working on it.
They've moved from SD to WI recently, and my Grams is VERY protective of the guitar-- a lot more than gramps is. So she won't let it be opened until their house is built and they're settled. Then I can rip the serial no and do some research.
My gramps would GIVE it to me (inherit), but my Grandma doesn't work that way. She'll probably ask me to find out how much it's worth, then offer to SELL it to me at some kind of discount. Never mind that I'm the ONLY descendant either of them has that plays guitar.
This particular LP is my "standard" against which all others are measured. Of the 70-80 LPs I've played in my life, only one or two have been in the same league for tone-- one was a plain Standard, another was the Jimmy Paige siggy model.
All the other LPs I've played just left me in disbelief at the terrible price/quality ratio. But I haven't played many LPs in the last 8 years or so..... I did play a Wine Red LP at a local GC that was a great LP, and probably even worth the $2200. It's disappointing how rare it is to find a LP that's a "player" worthy of the price tag...
Maybe I just need to play more of them or visit different stores.
