I have a question about guitars cords ... You can spend eyewatering amounts of money on a bit of wire, and whether this is sensible or not has been discussed to death. Out of shere meanness I have always used mid priced ones (Georege L's and Planet Waves) but I notice when they are plugged in to the amp, volume turned up a bit, they all make a loud crackly sound thought the amp as the cable is moved about. This disappears when plugged into a guitar. My question: are the really really high priced cords similarly noisy when just plugged into the amp with no guitar connected? Just curious. ...of course we call cords 'leads' over here...so whats the best guitar lead?

I think if the cord is quiet when it's plugged into a guitar then it might be an interesting observation but not really relevant in a practical way. Interesting phenomena though.

Unless you have a lead with a fancy tip that shorts out when unplugged, I think all of them do what you describe. Having a cable plugged into an amp but not the guitar just acts like an antenna and picks up all sorts of interference and noise, some caused by static electricity. Having the guitar plugged in completes the circuit and greatly reduces the crackle and hum.
Just curious, are you asking because you like to change guitars and unplugging and plugging in during a gig/rehearsal can be unpleasantly noisy while changing guitars?

No not really, I change guitars a bit but use the mute on the tuner to kill noise! I guess the crackling is something to do with altering capacitance when the lead is flexed about and wondered whether it is an indicator of quality if it is quieter. I was just curious whether the really REALLY expensive leads made that crackling noise.

I have been using custom made cables with Canare GS6 wire & Neutrik/G&H connectors for a while now. The cable have been excellent. No issues with them. I haven't had any crackle but I use a tuner mute when changing guitars as well.

I had the crackle you described when I was using Monster Cables. I switched to Bayou cables bayoucables.com/ made with Canare cable and G&H connectors, and it was gone. ...and they sound clearer to me too!
