Hey Madi...I am with you. I like the SCN's in my Strat. I had a strat with Kinman Woodstock's//they were great also. I have Fender Noisless in my Tele..and I like them as well..go figure Love the Kinman's, Lefty! Thanks again to Curt for hooking a former Tejas brother up ;D I looked this thread up for friend who was at my gig last night and asked about the SCN vs Kinmans. He had told me some time ago to ditch the SCN's, as they were basically junk. After reading this thread, and listening to Jayson, Gary & everyones slam on them, I knew it was time to move forward. The Kinman AVn 60's rule! I agree that the Kinmans are great!! I can still get some pretty cool tones from my "SCN Junk"

Nice playin Guitar Z! Between the Fenders and the Kinmans', Kinman gets my vote. I tried a set of Kinmans about 3 years ago. Sounded great. I found they sounded very similar to the Dimarzio virtual series. I am still very enamored with Bill Lawrences' L 280s' and his new 298's. Keep rockin! Rick.

After reading this thread I had to try Kinmans in place of my Stats SCNs. Muddy when turning the volume down was what got me and something that's really bugged and the S1 engaged setting were muddy as well. I’m glad that I did, the Kinmans add a clarity and openness that match the Z’s qualities. I installed the Kinman blues, Thanks Cheyenne for the Pups and Gary for the S1 insight and to all those on this thread that provided the great detail to push me into making the change. It was well worth it. I can’t say that I dislike the SCNs but I’d take the Kinmans over the SCNs anytime!

So, I'll leave this post with the following. I have two clips of a little solo. The first one is with the Fender Vintage Noiseless and the second is with the new Kinmans. I kind of like them both although the Kinmans seem to fit me a little better. Note, that I had the Vintage Noiseless, not the SCNs. Here is the solo with the Fender Vintage Noiseless: www.MikeZBand.com/music/Torn_Apart_Solo_II.mp3Here is the solo with the Kinman AVN Blues: www.MikeZBand.com/music/Torn_Apart_Kinmans.mp3The Kinmans sing a little more. The Fenders are a bit more raunchy. They're probably both a little raunchy with my playing style. So, the singing probably agrees with me more since I played a Les Paul with Soapbars for 20+ years. Shoot, they both sound good, although I already said that. At least with the Kinmans I can adjust the guitar volume control where I couldn't with the Fenders. OK, I just now got to listen to the Kinman solo, and I coulda SWORE it was a certain Texas blues slinger named Stevie Ray. Great tone! Great chops, too! I'm struck by how the lower register seems *so* close to SRVs tone! Awesome....

With the Kinmans I really noticed an enhanced low end clarity that sounds great with some hair on it. The Kinmans nail the rough-n-ready low note tones. And minor adjustments to the pup height make a big difference. I don't think I'd recommend them for metal type playing but anything else they really shine.

I've got a 50th Anniversary American Deluxe Strat w/ SCN pups and I totally agree with the muddy tones. I bought the guitar as a collectable piece so it does'nt get played but I really did'nt like its overall tone. The Kinman pups sound great but I don't think I want to alter the guitar. I just put a set of Lollar blackface pups in my 89' Strat, awesome tone!

He talks about the silencer system not changing the guitar sound. I'll have to take his word on that. Couldn't really hear the guitar with so much distortion. I could really hear how it cut back the hum though. If it does what they claim, and I was a Strat player, I think I'd have to have it.

Sold! That's the answer for all of the Strat cats. On Youtube recently I watched a live video of Jack Bruce and Rory Gallagher. The hum from Rory's Strat was almost as loud as the music.

Wow, that's a pretty graphic illustration of the difference a pup swap can make!
In the clips above, the Kinmans sound remarkably better, and dare I say "vintage" sounding. The thing with the Kinmans is that when I hear a vintage Strat tone in my head, it sounds JUST like a kinman clip of his website.
The startling thing to me is just how musical the Kinmans are. Smoother all around.
The Vintage Noiseless I had in my Am Std Strat were also raunchy, but raunchy in a "solid-state Crate amp" kind of way, not a "wall of ballsy tone" kind of way.
At least to my ears-- what's left of them.

Well kudos to Chris Kinman. The guy is supposed to be on vacation but he e-mailed me back after an hour or two. After another e-mail message to him, and he sent me the wiring diagrams and instructions to put my AVN Blues in the S1 switching system. The soldering iron is warming up! Would you mind posting or sending me the wiring diagram? I've got a S1 that I'd like to be able to use. I can get a pretty good tone from it on my Stingray, but that's the only amp. a_den_of_thieves@hotmail.com Thanks for the thread. I saw the guts of the guitar and figured it was a lost cause.
