Anyone know a good tech in the DFW area? I need to get a refret on my '69 ES-335. I love the way it feels, but it frets out alot. The frets are almost non-existent. Thanks for your help,
Strato

Thanks for your help, Strato He's not in your area, but I have sent guitars to Phil Jacoby in Baltimore and he is one of the best fret guys in the country. He also has the PLEK computerized system. John Suhr uses this same system on his guitars. Phil just did a PLEK & Buzz Feinten system on a Warmoth Strat I built. It is hands down the best playing Strat I've ever played. I can get the action ridiculously low with out buzz. Exceptional work! His website is philtone.com. FYI: His prices are close to what I've seen locally here in Charleston, SC.

I've inquired via email to Joe Glaser about Pleking a neck. It was mo' money but I bet it's worth it. He may be closer to DFW but I don't know. Google him.

Bob Pieper at One Flight Up Guitars in New Haven CT does GREAT work. He's refretted several of my guitars.

I'm curious about how much you guys are paying for a world class fret job. I just had one done on my Grosh Strat and it was not cheap. All said and done, and with a trem setup in the deal, I ended up spending $500. I swallowed hard, but the fret job is world class, and put the guitar right back where it was when I bought it.
What are you guys used to paying for world class fret work?

Strato, Kerry Cash at Player's Music in Hurst, or Mark Cigainero at his shop on the east side of Ft Worth are my favorites. Email me and I'll give you their phone info if you want. You might call Clay or Brian at Charley's in Dallas and have them recommend somebody a little closer to you. www.playersmusic.net/repair.html

I priced a refret for my American Standard strat ('87), and found it was cheaper to just buy a WHOLE NEW NECK!!! Got a neck from USA Custom Guitars for about $240, including stainless frets.
Maybe when I have more money I'll refret the Fender neck.
Couldn't do that with a set neck, though...

I'm going to have Bob Pieper refret my Firebird in a little bit. It's quite convenient since his shop is the next town over from mine :-D

"My guy" is Don Dunlavey in Atlanta. Has a one man shop and is the best I've ever known. he built my Strat and Tele, and is doing a fret job on my Dunlavey Tele right now. Does amazxing work on Gibby's as well... Two things (and he'll tell you this): He ain't fast, and he ain't cheap. But it's done right. It won't leave his shop until he's satisfied with it. And oh yeah, he's a Z owner and has been on this forum some. I think a typical fret job on a rosewood board is around $275, or somewhere in that range. More info on him here: www.evor.com/dunlavey.htmlLet me know if you want to get in touch, because it's cheap to ship a neck from DFW to the Atl, and would be worth it. He does guitar work for guys all over the country... Joe Glaser here in Nashville is the "default" No.1 in terms of guitar craftsmen in these parts. But I think you'll get just as good of a job from someone like Dunlavey. J

Yeah, definately worth the drive to Cowtown. Mark Cigainero been repairing guitars since the 70's and is one of the best, if you ask me. Kerry Cash at Player's music in Hurst is equally talented. Don't know what the goin' rate is at Mark's but I'll guarantee its WAY less than the 'Welcome to LA' rush job price I paid a while back...THREE HUNDRED geetas. Next time I'll go fretless!

Hey Strato-
Might also talk to Jim at Texas Guitar & Sound
TEXAS GUITAR & SOUND 2305 S. HIGHWAY 121 # 185 LEWISVILLE TX 75067 (972) 315-0133
He did all my amp and guitar tweaks while I lived there - great guy and really great service. Small, quiet, out of the way shop that caters to the pro players in the area. He'll treat you right!
There's a McDonald's on the corner of the stripmall and his shop is between the Boy Scouts of America office and a Hot Wings restaurant. Also a cool model hobby shop (helicopters/airplanes/boats/cars)a few shops down if you're interested in that. And, a pawn shop across Hwy 121 that has some interesting stock from time to time.
