Terryg noticed that I live in the home town of Pat and Mike Metheny and how Pat had been an influence for him and I remembered that I have this guitar book with one of Pat's custom guitar's in it. Here is a scan of that page from the book hopefully everyone will be able to read it. I'd be wore out just tuning up!! It looks like a "Bad Acid" triip to me.

Wow! That doesn't even look like a real guitar. It looks like a doctered photo. Very unique looking. Thanks for sharing

Linda is a wonderful luthier, her guitars are incredible, I've been lucky enough to try two of them. That, however, is a monstrosity.

that's the 42 string that he used on Imaginary Day. Great CD! I saw that guitar on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It was great, the MFA dedicated an exhibit to guitars. Pat's one of my favorite guitarists.

Imaginary day is a great disc. I am still partial to some of his early stuff. Especially that live album called 'Travels'.

Imaginary Day is his best work the facto, I'm never tired of this disc. I saw him live in Wienna in 98 on Imaginery tour and I was simply in heaven, such a performance of art.

Indeed!
That guitar, the "Pikasso" (for obvious reasons) is a total trip. I believe there are two in existence. But to hear him play it is astounding, it's very mesmerizing and to me beautiful - it doesn't sound as dissonant as it looks, in his hands at least. From the Imaginary Day CD it's featured on "Into the dream." After seeing him play, I don't have much reason to believe that the recording is overdubbed. For that tour he opened with "Into the dream" alone on a darkened stage. Hypnotic...and then he starts to wail on it.
I agree Imaginary Day is some of the group's strongest work, but his recent "Way Up" is right up there in composition...thank goodness. Otherwise I clearly gravitate to the early stuff. Both tours (ID twice, WU once unfortunately) were some of my favorite musical experiences.

That's an amazing instrument. I'll have to check out Imaginary Day. I saw The Pat Metheny Group in 1978. My feeling at the time was he just played a lot of notes that didn't add up to much but fatigue for me. However, Travels was recorded just five years later and I think it's brilliant. I either missed the point in '78 or they got a lot better fast.

I checked out Metheny's website and found a quote of his saying he really hasn't figured out how to tune that instrument.

wow, he *is* human after all!
I have that Speaking of Now DVD, and I've only watched it once (I wasn't crazy about that album or tour). I'll definitely go looking for that tonight. Raja, did you nab the Imaginary Day stuff?
