I'm thinking of grabbing a G&L Classic, but I'd like to get a more classic tele spank with the bridge pup. Can you "drop in" a regular Tele pickup into an ASAT while still using the factory bridge plate?

Yep, any tele bridge pup will drop right in but...give those G&L pups a chance...plenty of classic tones to be had as is.

I have an ASAT Classic Semi-Hollow, Maple fretboard all stock. The pickups sound great individually but there is a big volume difference from bridge to neck. (Neck is about 30% louder). There are so many great after market choices, but I agree with rcrecelius, play around a bit with the stock pickups. The stock bridge sounds killer if you tweak your amp eq a bit. The only change I've made on the guitar is swapping out the string saddles to the G&L brass saddles (some ASAT Classics have them, some don't). Best $26 I've spent, (plus the cost of a good pro setup).

I have an older 86" I think ASAT classic with leo's name on the front of the guitar. Those G&L pickups kick booty through my Maz junior playing clean spanking style but I dont know, they seem weird when trying to use them in a hot distotred styled tone. My CS 51 Nocaster kills either way, clean or distorted. I have a friend that made a Tele copy and he put in a Lollar Special in the rear and a Lollar Imperial HB up front. I'll tele ya this: those Lollars rip! Big, huge. sweet, tight, burn, twangy with attitude.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. I've had an ASAT Classic a few years ago, but needed some fast cash. I think the stock pups were great, but I couldn't get the bright twang I was looking for from the bridge. I'd like to maybe pickup a used ASAT (very undervalued on the used market) and drop in more traditional pickups. Anybody else know if the ASAT Classic will take replacement Tele pups in the neck & bridge?

He describes the Tele Special bridge as "Higher output version of the Vintage bridge with a rounder top end and fuller mids—not your classic twangy sound.". I'd like a bridge with a little more body, but I'm still looking to keep some twang. What's your opinion of Lollar's description?

I would think with all of the tone shaping capability of your Maz 38 that you could get good twang from about any pickup that's at least in the ballpark.

Yes, same measurements.
$.02, those ceramic MFD pups in the ASATs and S500s are smokin! Amazing versatility - ASATs can get great spanky new and traditional country tones, smooth blues and jazz tones (neck), and really great drive tones (use mine w/Fender, Dr. Z, Vox and Boogie amps for all kinds of music). In the S500, can get all the typical Strat sounds plus a whole lot more depending on the pup placement w/regard to the strings and the tone controls.
That said, if you are deadset on changing out the pups, you might consider the Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue, Vintage Broadcaster, or the Vintage Stack for Tele (hum canceling if you need that). Also, if you can find an original run Fender Custom Shop Nocaster Clean (vs. Relic) you'd be pleased (original run had a higher output than current production).

Pretty sure RC has the Tele Elite set. Mine are custom wound w/hybrid mags, AV/AIII.
VERY smooth, no piercing highs, AWESOME neck pup, very Strat like and they love dirt, amazing 'bucker tone with a dirt box yet do the Tele spank when cleaner. Jerry will work with you if you want something special. I wanted smoother highs and fat mids.

Hey!! Sorry this was so late in the reply. I love those Lollars, but maybe it's me. I have an absolutley killer CS. 51 Nocaster with a Louisville slugger neck on it and I love love love this guitar (even tho I'm a strat guy) but after playing my buddies parts Tele with those Lollar specials in it , i was thinking that my Nocasters might be a little anemic and weak??? But again it could be just me. My thoughts on the ASAT pup's were that they were great at "one" thing more than switching from front to back etc. on the fly like a good strat player would And they sounded weird all cranked up even tho that aint what an ASAT is all about. My Jeff beck strat with Joe bardens in it smoked unbelievelby through my Mesa mark IIC+ and Triaxis rack set up but through my Maz Jr. they were hard and not so "vintagey" But my 51 CS. Nocaster smokes with all the amp setups I have and so that got me into thinking about pickups and how they react and feel differently from each other. But I think either way the fine Tele monsters on this forum wouldn't steer you wrong or too far off from the almighty Tele twang factor. The Lollars just did it for me with one pedal, a Real Tube with an NOS RCA 5963 ( 12au7) and a feww volume knob tweaks and it was shades of every color...Yeowzaa. that guitar and Z Mazzy Jr. was smoking!!!! I liked it so much that I'm gonna build me a parts Strat now with Lollar Specials in it and get rid of my prized JB Strat. I know, the vintage Strat bridges sound way better than the newer ones by far but I am a jeff beck fan!
