While I was in the shop today I was talking with Don about how clean the Monza sounded with the MV mod and guitar volume turned down. He suggested using 12AT7s instead of 12AX7 for an even cleaner sound - it does take a little more hair off the Monza if that's what you're looking for.

I tried a 12AT7in my Monza today, it gives a cleaner, brighter tone but still has plenty of Monza attitude...I like it

I thought I'd chime in here, as it is tonehound code to never leave another tonehound in the dark here's what myle's says about 12AT7's "As a side note or tip, a 12AT7 is a terrible tone generator. These are best for reverb drivers and phase inverters. If you want something in this gain range in the front end of your amp procure an NOS 5751 or try a 12AY7."

...i've been working out some clean sound for my Monza...i put a 5751 in V1...playing through a Blue and a clean boost set at minimal volume...(jauerning atomic fet-boy)...drive all the way down...tone at 9:30 and volume up around 10...i'm getting some pretty big voxy ac-30 like cleans....just turn up the drive to get billy back in the box...

I'm wanting a cleaner sound for the monza when I need it..I love the drive and the guitar volume cleans it up well. Just breaks up a bit too soon.
I'm almost at the point of selling and getting another Z with a little more headroom, but man does this thing sound great loud and grinding, can't beat it.
I'm soooo on the fence. B

...ya know...the Monza gets some pretty good cleans...they're not tight squeaky cleans...more like cleanish... its just that the good drive comes in at a higher volume level...hence the brakelites and mv mods....still there are Z choices that are more versatile...and i mean it when i say that any one of the seven Dr Z model's i've owned has come with a huge grin factor...
