what the Z-28's big brother??? Looking at the KT-45, the Route 66, and the Stangray, playing mostly blues and some classic rock.

Hey pintail,
This is a quiet part of the forum sadly, and I have asked the same question several times. IMHO, the KT45 is the big brother of the Z28 clear and simple. Route 66 has similar V/T stack and the EF86, but on all the YouTubes I could find, the Katie nails it best.
Try this for size and see what you think - especially from 5:22 onwards it gets very lively!! Sounds closest to Z28 to my ears ;D

Great to hear Katie singing like that. Not enough clips of her. Need to get a good 66 link next to it for a good comparison. Thing with Katie, pedals are an option. Tele, Strat and a 335/LP, and a closed cab/Z best, and an open back with 10" alnicos and you have a plethora of sounds at your fingertips. Just not quite so convenient to get all that stuff to a gig? I'll hopefully be able to do a z28 comparison soon with bustertheboy and can't wait. I've played all 3 separately. From what I have heard so far katie is the big sis'. And there is enough difference between the 66 and katie to get both. I love the 66 and have to get one one day. And probably a 28. They are all loud in real terms. It is simply the best front end I've come across in an amp. The EF86 is stunning and I prefer it to my matchless ef86 set clean. Just. Some days........ There have been a few people who have had both. I've read all of those posts and asked this same question myself once or twice. When I got my KT I was meant to get a second hand 66 at the same time, but it apparently fell of the back of a truck and got run over, or he changed his mind? Thing is, the way I play Katie is a whole lot cleaner than that example with the Z best. But it could also be the microphone. But Katie still sounds the same. Just cleaner with a huge big fat bloom that kisses her gold 10s in the sweetest possible way. Thats what I reckon anyhow

Just got the Katie and its very similar to the Z-28 in terms of tone, its more articulate in break though. Not sure I need the Z-28 as the Katie with an airbrake does almost the same thing or maybe better. Sure enough its the EF-86 front end, Ive had a quite a few of the big Z's remedy/maz38 etc and its so much better....no matter what you play. Watch the gearmandude video on it and thats what I felt as well, its screamer.
