I just read a thread from another forum memeber ..... Saying the ray was not.loud enough in a gig situation using a 2x12 gold cab. I use a 1x12 gold and my Ray always gets the drummer hitting hard and the bass player turning up his 8x10 Ampeg SVT 350 up:))) I also push my Ray pretty hard into heavy gain with a Timmy BB preamp set up for stacking.

Whoever says the stangray isn't loud enough can come run sound for my band. I have yet to have a sound guy not tell me to turn down.

I realize after 6-7 on the volume it justs gets more hair on the notes but man . I really think for me the Ray cuts through like no other. I never mic mine either. Please, anyone thinking of getting a Ray..... Its plenty loud . Ask anyone here on the forum.

My buddy will swear that the Ray has one of the best tones he has ever heard and then turn right around and say it isn't loud enough when played clean. Of course he is talking about gigging an he is pretty snappy in his attack.

Yep, I run mine with a 12AT7 in the PI with the volume at 9:00 or # 2, tone and cut at 12:00. With humbuckers it starts breaking up pretty easily in the hi input. It is a glorious sound but just not enough clean volume. Has anyone tried a 12AU7 in the PI yet? ? rp

HEY RADALP3000 Are you saying that the AT7 is all it takes to make the ray Breakup FASTER??? I have tried evrything to get this effect, Using a goode Ceramic Higher wattage type Like a V30 or G12-65, The Ray stays Nice Punchy and Clean til a Bit over Halfway. The Ray Is An Amazing amp!

No I use the 12at7 to get more headroom than the 12ax7 but it's still not clean enough. I'm using Dimarzio PAF's which are a pretty low output humbucker but this thing breaks up way too early. Maybe I have a weird one, I'm gonna pull the chassis and see if there's any monkey business. I'm getting another one next week on a trade and I'll have to compare the two. I ran it tonight at a gig through my Z best cab with the volume at 9 o clock and it was quite distorted. And yes I have tried numerous tubes in all positions, preamp, power amp and rectifier.

The Ray will breakup naturally especially with alnico speakers. Sounds like you may need to.try a Fender Style amp . my Super Reverb stay s clean till about 6 on the volume dial but its Sooooooo LOUD!!!! I love the breakup that the ray gives .

Always use the "Lo" input on the Ray. More headroom, and it sounds better (slightly higher impedance).

It's as loud as an AC30, which is pretty freaking loud. I use a Brake Lite with mine and run it pretty conservatively and it's PUH-LENTY of volume. Unless you're playing outside and running sound from the stage, I can't imagine needing more than a 30 watt amp. I used to gig with a Blues Junior. Throw a mic in front of it and have a nice day.

I wish the Doc would do what he did with the RXES with the Ray and bring out a Jr so I am not always bleeding from the ear after shows... I would hop on that deal so fast...

I have recently been using the Ray With My Air Brake, Whole new Amp far as tone goes. I tried a BL witht the Ray when I first got it, I wasnt crazy about the sound. IMO I think the AB sounds better it also works well with my SRZ! too! The Ray is Just PERFECT The WAY it IS!!! 3 KNOBS=AMAZING TONE try an inefficient speaker like the Greenback or any type 98db and under ;D

A simple speaker cab change can yield higher volume such as 4x12 or closed back 212 with more efficient speakers like EVM12L or Celestion 12-65's.
