G'day, I have a earth hum coming through the amp. Touching the chassis will stop it, as will muting the guitar strings. The tubes are not very old. I have tapped the tubes while under load and no noise was coming from them. I have checked all the basics as in leads, guitar etc. Does anyone have any ideas on where the problem lies

Is the wall outlet actually grounded?
Does it happen without the guitar plugged in? Grounding noise that improves with touching the strings happens with all of my Gibsons. Not sure why, but im told its fairly safe...
Is your power cord plugged in properly?
Are the chassis bolts tightened properly?
Any other devices or amps that are plugged into different outlets causing ground loops?
Less likely:
Are you using a step up transformer (what are your mains in australia, 240V?) that is often a source of noise.
Is there any electronic gear near your transformer that is inroducing hum?
Are the power tubes matched?
AC line noise?
That's all I can think of.
