Ok... Brent I hope you see this, because some of your suggestions where used for these mods. I want to thank you for taking the time to actually talk to me one the phone. That's just unheard of these days!
Here goes:
(1) Change the slope resistor from 47K to a Carbon Film, 1 watt, 33K ohm (part #R-B33K).
(2) Change the cut knob cap from .0047 to an Orange Drop, .0068 uF @ 600 volts (part #C-SD0068-600).
(3) In V1, use a TAD ECC83-WA (part #T-ECC83WA-TAD)
(4) In V2, use a TAD 12AX7A-C (part #T-12AX7-PS-TAD)
(5) Use the stock Sovtek LPS in V3.
(6) Use TAD's 5AR4-STR rectifier tube.
(7) Get a 50 watt Celetion Gold (8 Ohms)
All parts (except the Gold) where purchased online from Antiquity Electronic Supply (www.tubesandmore.com)
Note: I've had my 38 Sr. for about a year, now, and to be honest I just thought it was too bright for my taste. The cut knob was always at 0, treble at 3 , mids at 10 , bass at 12 o'clock... and still was way too bright and brittle for my Relic Nocaster... Now, cut is on 2 up to 4, treble on 10, mids on 11, bass on 12. All that said, this is now the best sounding amp I have ever played through!!! To think I was almost ready to trade it in on something else...
Again, thank you Brent for the suggestion on the cap and resistor! You should tell the Doc that this should be the stock setup on future Maz's... serious!
Hope this is useful for someone out there in Z-land.

Sooooooooooo, I'm curious...what exactly did this do to your amp?..especially the cap and resistor mods. More sparkle?...more low end?....more gain?....details, man, details!

Here is a post from the Doc, ztalk.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=news&action=display&thread=91Looks like he bumped the lower mids and bass a little with the slope resistor and lowered the presence with the cap. Like he said the amp was way too bright with his tele now it's more manageable. hope this helps rp

I'm trying some of these mods starting with the slope resistor. I will post some pics here as I progress unless forum owners don't want that, and as I'm able, I'll post some audio clips. Ciao......

(1) Change the slope resistor from 47K to a Carbon Film, 1 watt, 33K ohm (part #R-B33K). To my ears, the slope resistor from 56K to 33K had the most effect on warming up my MAZ38. My MAZ38 has MFR date of 7/2011-s/n V.51325. To my ears, the other things weren't worth the $$ and time spent for what I heard when I did them. Fortunately, I had the speaker, and the rest of the parts, and was able to borrow the tubes from a friend. I put my amp back to stock except the 33K ohm slope resistor. I loved the amp just the way it was, but the extra bass and lower mids with the 33K slope resistor just made it better for me. I'm grateful to DRZ and the OP for generously sharing the info. Many thanks!

Hallo Mike, thanks for your review. Do you have any pictures, especially for slope resistor and cut cap? Can give you my Mail adress just in case pictures are against the Forum rules. Thanks René
