Howdy folks, just bought a used Ghia 2x10 that I am totally digging, but I am having a problem with tube rattle. One of the EL84's isn't being held in tight enough. Is it possible to just re-bend or tweak the tube spring, or will I have to get a new one? If so, how? Also, the rectifier tube holder is broken. How would I go about getting a new one of those? Thanks, Aaron www.aaroncheney.com

Prob #1. Tube rattle
The problem may not be the socket, but the tube. So no matter the amount of tension to hold the tube in will cure it. The caveat of EL84s is the eventual rattle. 9/10 times the rattle is not caused from the spring retainer but the tube itself. Get some new tubes.
Prob #2. Rectifier Tube socket "holder" broken
How is it broken? Is it cracked? Or are you referring to the clip that grips the side of the tube to hold it in? If it's the spring clip that is broken, you can get them at any amp parts supplier and install it very easily. If the socket is broken, it will need to be replaced, please refer to a qualified amp tech to be replaced.
You may contact Z to service your amp, he will do it right. And given the condition that this amp possibly in, there may be more wrong that you don't know about.

Hey Arron, Welcome to the Z-Forum. Left is correct. EL84's rattle. I invested in these: herbiesaudiolab.home.att.net/I got dampners for my EL84's and Rectifier. Cleared up the rattle. pg

Thanks guys. I swapped positions with the EL84's and your speculation proved to be true....the same tube was still rattling. So I'll either get some new ones or get the dampers. Thanks for the suggestion.
On the rectifier tube it is not the socket that is broken...just the clip. I'll try and hunt down a parts source.
Thanks, Aaron

I tried for about 20 minutes to find who sold those Hal-O tube dampeners. I'm glad you posted that link!! I bought the last GEC EF86 that KCA had and unfortunately it starts to ring when cranked up. I touch it and it stops so I can put a dampener on it not hgave to send it back. It's a sweet sounding tube! Better be for $85!
