Auto Wah/Envelope Filter. I think it is the same thing Warren Haynes uses.

I think it helps if your guitar's out of tune...

I think it helps if your guitar's out of tune... And if you're stoned out of your skull. JH nope... that's never worked for me. tried it a lot! The other guitarist in my band has a Mutron III. I've played 3 gigs with it in the past week. It's one of the most transparent pedals i've used with my Z amps. Very sweet sounding. It's gotten me very close to the Jerry sound.

suprised at the lack of respect for such a fantastic guitarist. The mutron should work. Also the guy who invented Jerry's original Mutron is the same guy who invented the Q-tron plus by electro harmonix. I owned it at one time and you can def get the garcia sound using it.

I'm by no means a Dead Head or part of their infamous flock, but Jerry's playing was always a very unique aural experience when I saw them live. This was ca. 1990, so their racks and gear were quite sophisticated by then. His guitar tone was always crystal clear and clean and very high volumes. I work with a couple of guys who built his racks in those days, so it varied and got changed up often. Always an experiment. They use the best of the best of everything. It sounded like a CD played through a super hi-fidelity sound system. Again, very high volume, but clear as a bell. He did like the auto wah among other effects, but that's one you're probably after in attaining his sound.

The MXR Envelope Filter used to be a good way to get that sound on the cheap. I am/was a DH and a veteran of many shows. GD was an acquired taste to many, but the GD have probably expanded my musical journey simply by by reading their rekkid covers and learning who wrote the songs they cover, and I then would buy rekkids of them. I've tried and have other Envelope Filters and unless the guitar volume is maxed the cheap ones basically all suck imho. The Mutron is what JG used... but are wicked expensive... the MXR EF or the variants of that design seem to come through.

thanks guys... I've been free to hang on to this Mutron III and it's really a sweet sounding effect so I'm good for now. Of what's been suggested, I really liked what i heard on some of the Proton demos. I think if i could get my hands on one, i'd be seriously considering it. Paul.... this Mutron I have is the "HAZ" Mutron III. You can find them in the low $200's. I don't know what the deal is between the originals which are the pricey models and the HAZ re-issues. I just know it's a sweet sounding pedal when it's in-line between my LP and my Ghia. (google: HAZ Mutron III)

my band does a few dead covers now and then, and i use a Micro-Qtron like maddog suggested. great little pedal, especially or 80 bucks, only thing i dont like about it is it seems to have a few db boost when engaged, and theres no level knob on the micro...might have to upgrade to the q-tron+... but i use it so sparingly its nothing to really worry about. unless u use auto-wah on a ton of songs, i personally cant see spending 200+ on one.... altho the TWA one sounds 'grate'...

I've found this cheap old Boss Dynamic Filter FT-2; I think it comes from the eighties and it's not exactly an auto-wha but fiddling with the settings gives you some interesting choices, even for solos.
