I wired up 2 9 volt batteries in series to run my OCD and liked the sound. I also have an old Big Muff that is a pain to change the battery.
I was planning on wiring up a DPDT switch to switch out one of the batteries so I can switch between 9 and 18 volts quickly. (To see if the additional voltage really does make a difference in the OCD)
Then I thought, I could also wire the switch to put the batteries either in parallel or series. In parallel I thought I would get the 9 volts I need for the Big Muff and with 2 batteries in parallel, maybe they would last longer.
Am I correct? Is this safe in a 1980's Muff? Will it help battery life? Do I have too much time on my hands?

In parallel, battery life is all that's helped. The pedal will see one 9V battery with longer life.
In series, you get 18V.
Sorry I can't help on your other questions.
