Had to do some work in the basement. Finished up and headed into my little music room. Thought it was a good day to get Wrecked. Decided I'd try to hold the bluesy noodling to a minimum and, instead, focus on chords, arpeggios and rhythm. That prompted me to do some knob tweaking. Ended up with B and T both around 9:30 to 10 (o'clock), volume about 10 and Cut 2:30. Brake on 2. Strat with both volume and tone backed off. Pretty clean sound, as you'd expect, but with the Cut up there was some grit with heavier pick attack or a little twist of the guitar volume. Really pleased with the sound Anyone else got some interesting settings or new observations? Then I put the Brake on bypass for a few minutes. Well ;D

Yes, it will keep you going for a long time. The gain structure changes via the volume control cover a wide range. Then you bring tone controls and cut into the picture, and you can get into a lot of tone zones.

Man i don' t like to wish my life away but this is gonna be a long 8 weeks! J5

I've noticed that you can get a very cool grit with bass around 9 o'clock and treble around 3 o'clock; volume up around 2 o'clock and cut to taste - very bright, but daaaang - it could have a place in a recording for sure. Very nasty tone going on there...

jammer5: I've got my ZW on "speed." I forget there's a switch back there steve: yes, that would be some serious tone. And loud ;D My feeling is that one can roughly subdivide the volume/gain into three segments: (1) off to 10 (o'clock) or so; (2) from there to about 1 or 2 and (3) everything up to max.

There's simply nothing like a short signal path (in the amp) for super-versatility & super-responsiveness. I've wanted a Ray since it came out, but haven't had the cash for a Z since selling my RxJR. But when I do, I think it's going to be a Wreck.
My only complaint with these amps (and it's only a complaint because I don't gig right now, I'm a home player) is their VOLUME. We all know how LOUD these damn things are! I had an Airbrake, that I sold, because I discovered as good as it is, I simply don't like what attenuators do to the tone & feel. If I remember correctly, they seem to affect Z's less (with their short signal path)?
I know that one demo of the Wreck with the AB on Bedroom sounds INCREDIBLE.

^^^
Yes, it is loud and yes, the attenuator works well with Dr Z amps. With the Wreck, it's pretty much an essential, imo.

Now, my man Benttop Steve has hit on my settings exactly. Bass around 9 o'clock (can be dialed between 8-10 o'clock to dial out mush and add tightness as needed depending on the room and your Brake setting), Treble around 2 o'clock (can be dialed 1-3 o'clock to dial in or out some midrange) and Volume starts at 2 o'clock, dialed down to 1 o'clock to clean her up for country licks and up to 3 o'clock to really Rock or Blues it. I dont care where you set the cut - sounds good about any where from 9 o'clock to wide open. Any of those knob changes result in no appreciable volume change (that is all done with the Air Brake), so no distortion or gain pedals needed!!!!!! I'm straight into a Tremulator pedal for the occasional Trem song, then into a Z Verb (barely verbing) and then into the Wreck! And also, if you turn the brake quieter, you need to back off the Volume cause it distorts more with more braking. Turn up the volume with the Brake, turn up the Wreck's volume to get dat nazz back in your tone!
I've fallen out of luv with the Wreck cabinet, though. I can make it sound good by adding a little extra bass (around 10 o'clock). But the danged amp sounds so sweet through the Z Best or a Matchless cab (G12H30/Greenback) that I've even considered putting the Wreck cab up for sale. The Wreck also sounds superb through a 1-12 Z cab with a G12H30 in it for a light weight rig that does not sacrifice any for volume, only loses some of the compression-like sound that the Z Best or Matchless cab has (that's the Greenback or Vintage 30 distortion that smooths out the G12H30 I believe).
Anyway, just had to chime in here. Been loving this amp and the Remedy for live gigs around town and band rehearsals at home and recording and just home playing. Can't imagine going back to any amp of my past. These two thangs are sooooooo freakin' good!

Weird that you mentioned a Matchless cab! I've been kicking around the idea of investing in one of those bad boys myself! Theyre like an undiscovered gold mine! That 212 with the greenback and v30 sounds pretty dang exciting in my opinion!

Yeah I've used these Matchless cabs a lot for many years and really like 'em for any head I've played through 'em. They are a bit lighter that the Z Best, and definitely less bulky! But then, the Z Best is so predictable being closed back. It's the ying and yang, the give and take, the duplicity of life!
