What box gets closest to the early EVH type gainy Plexi Marshall sound? I've read the V-Stack is good but I wonder how it'll do in front of an amp and not direct. Menatone Blue Collar? Tonebone? I need something for lower volume practice. I tried the last two POD's and they just didn't do it for me. I'm looking for something analog.
thanks,
PDW

The Zvex "Box of Rock" is the real deal. Plexi Marshall for days. Go to their web site and watch the video demo. Sounds like the tone you're looking for.

I have the V-Stack and use it infront of my Maz Jr. NR...killer. The nice thing is you can get a good Marshall Munch with your amp still under ear bleed conditions.

A SansAmp pedal does a pretty good trick and its analog. But you have to remember not to gain up your amp too much or it'll not sound good at all. Tonebones are nice too for that lower volume practice without ear bleeding ..I have two for sale!!

If you can find an old 'Guv'nor' pedal, they nail it purty good, purty cheap. In another, 'pre-'Z' existance, I ran one thru a 2X10 Vibrolux with remarkable results. Well, at least I thought so. Wouldn't pay much for one though, in the end its all just something to square off yer sine wave....why, here's one now! cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170081092259&fromMakeTrack=true

I had one of those for a long time, they aren't bad. A bit compressed IMHO, but not bad.

Crunchbox is pretty good. I sold it to try something else, a Keeley DS-1. I think I like the Crunchbox better. damn pedals.

What box gets closest to the early EVH type gainy Plexi Marshall sound? Brown Sound In a Box 2, or as it's known, BSIAB2. I built one awhile back and still have it. Kits are also available now with everything you need included. If you're not comfortable about building your own, PM me and I'll put you in touch with someone that can do it for you. Btw, there is a sound sample on this page done by Ed Guidry who designed it. www.generalguitargadgets.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=150&Itemid=178Ray K.

The Crunch Box has been good to me too, but it's now obsolete to my SRZ.

Box of Rock all the way!...I just got one about a week ago. Go watch his demo video and you'll see for yourself. I'm running it a little differently through a Maz38 NR, but I like it alot. I would have paid the price tag just for the boost...man is it sweet. I turn it on and rarely does it shut off!

Just got my crunch box and played saturday night, it was amazing distortion, wont back down to a o/d box but responds well to volume on guitar, use ocd for o/d sounds

Yes, King of the Britain's does it for me. Very reminiscent of a plexi Marshall. I had a chance to try a Box of Rock the other day. To me it sounded like whatever amp I played it through. It had a lot of gain, for sure, but I didn't get the "Marshall thing" from it at all. The boost was really nice on it.

I've asked this same question a number of times. I've tried a million pedals (many boutique). The King of the Britons is totally processed sounding. Boss has nothing. I don't like Keeley or Fulltone (have had both numerous times). Honestly, the best Marshall sound out there is a small box Rat (trust me on this). Start with the volume up to at least 3 o'clock, the filter should be somewhere between 2 and 3 o'clock (it's very sensitive, experiment), and the gain should be set last so that it is just barely dirty (about 8-9 o'clock). This may be more of an low gain JCM 800 sound but it's beautiful.
Other great ODs are Lovepedal Eternity and Crowther Hotcake. The Eternity nails that low gain, high volume Malcolm Young tone and the Hotcake is much like a Rat but a little darker (you have to again, set the volume high, the gain low, and tweak the presence (normally I have it pretty high)).
I hope that helps. I'm still tweaking pedals for my new Mazerati that I just got. But I always end up back behind a Rat.

Just a perfect club amp that sang like nobody'd business. In a fit of insanity I took it over to George Alessandro's house and traded it for one of his Working Dogs. The absolute dumbest gear move I ever made. Excuse me, I'm starting to get all dewey Another vote for the Box of Rock... used discretely it turns a Ghia into a full bore Plexi (more or less)

Ya know, unfortunately all great recomendations all sound different in different amps! My favorite OD in the world sounds like ss "Shane" in my 65 Vibrolux Rvb! Put it to my 66 and its incredible. I think theres just no easy way around having to just try everything. After a while i think you can start grouping pedals by there basic character, and kinda narrow the field a bit. But i guess the point is that it probably helps to know what amp your planning on using, to get the best results from recomendations.
