I used my Ghia last night with my ZBest and a very stripped down pedal board (Franklin SD-1 mod, Clark Gainster, MI Crunch Box, Fender tuner and Barge DB-2). I played one set with a Mullard 12AT7 in V1, the in 2 and 3 switched to a Tung-Sol 12AX7 reissue, and I have to say that as sweet as that little Mullard was on clean and semi distorted stuff, the Tung -Sol was absolutely outsanding. Very focused and tight, with a nice little snarl to it as well. I think I'm going to leave it in there and keep the Raytheon it replaced in my spare box for recording...

Patsy Cline to No Doubt... M C Carpenter to Pat Benatar. Pretty broad spectrum, but for some reason I always load up on ODs...

Yeah, the new Tungsols are very good. Also like the new JJ ECC803. Still don't quite compare to an NOS Tungsol or Telefunken in the ghia, but I really like the trend - better sounding new tubes. If they could only get the quality control up to where it was in the 50's and 60's. Maybe if we keep buying them, they will.

I like JJs in general and have since I tried some EL84s in a Mesa DC3 years ago as replacments for the stock Sovteks. The preamp tubes are really good too, although maybe without that NOS cachet to 'em. Most of the tubes in the spare case are JJs, aside from a couple GT Mullards and the TungSol and a few NOS RCAs and the Raytheon. I have spares for my spares... You'll never know what will happen on a gig 75 miles from home...
