Hello. New here. contemplating my first Z amp.
Demo'd a Z Wreck few days back. Wonderful blooming cleans as you might expect. Cranking the volume give a nice smooth breakup but, I'd like to push it into some nice crunch with a decent bottem end. Anyone have experience with this? Does it take OD pedals well? Which pedals do you recommend? I should note that I'm not a great (even good) player, yet. I think I saw a thread mentioning Timmy-OD and Klon-boost worked very well. Others?
Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum. You seem to be going for the top of the line right out of the gate! While some folks just crank it and go, the Z Wreck is a great foundation to add any quality OD and get awesome sounds. Take your pick, they'll all sound grand~.... BTW, while the Z Wreck is one awesome amp, don't think you have to shell out almost $4000 to get a great DR Z sound. You can't go wrong with a Maz Jr or Ghia either.

Thanks Mark and thanks for the feedback. I will check out the Maz Jr and the Carmen Ghia. My local shop has each of them I think. After hearing the Z Wreck, I'm pretty smitten. I must admit I do like a nice crunch with a full bottom end. I've got several ODs/boost that would fit the bill. What about the Maz Sr? Similar tone with more gain/headroom? Sounds like I need to research/demo a bit more. Glad to be here BTW.

I thought the Wampler Paisley Drive sounded great with it with my Tele's. Also liked it with my Sonic Edge J&J Overdrive and my Zonkin' Yellow Screamer. For low volume playing this amp seems to play well with overdrive pedals. Can't wait to receive my attenuator so I can really put the tubes to work and not my ears! J5

Update: I spent some more time with the Sonic Edge J&J Overdrive and was really digging how it complimented the z wreck sound at lower volume levels. Ben Fargen built a damn fine pedal! It's not a high gain pedal by any means but it does that mild gain break up brilliantly! It really does play well with the Wreck IMHO. I used my G&L ASAT Classic Rustic and the overdrive pedal only. Wow.

I'm using my Landgraff Mo'd overdrive and the Landgraff Boost pedal, but not usually together. Also getting a good sound with my Foxrox ZIM. It has two different overdrives in it. One is a tubescreamer type sound and the other is a tube drive sound. I honestly beleive that you could use any drive pedal with the Wreck and its going to sound good. Maybe even try one of the Walmart First Act pedals, if they make one of those. Just kidding!

You can try the Mad Professor Sweet Honey Overdrive, but I'm sure you won't be wrong with a Xotic BB Preamp.

I am sold on the Wampler Paisley Drive. The sweet spot is to crank the Z Wreck so you get a little dirt and then sweeten it with the Paisley. Works great for classic rock, country and anything else.

I like low gain stuff. At this time a Hellbender maybe tomorrow a Barber 1/2gainer/TS808/Mudhoney/BoR ZVex or a TC Novadrive.
I know there's are a few ds pedals but I like it to tweak them down - makes them mellow.
Wreck is a very friendly amp for most pedals in my experience.

Maxon's (fairly unheard of) OD9Pro+ works exceptionally well with the Z Wreck. It's your classic tubescreamer-ish overdrive, but with a very neutral tonal balance (doesn't get dark) and MUCH less compression than a standard 808/OD9 pedal. I just shot a 5-pedal OD shootout for Maxon. It should be up by the end of the week. I'll link to it when it's available so you can hear the difference.

Menatone Red Snapper. Has a nice bite control and adjustable gain with a cut, you can dial in and out as much as you want, and it never fatigues the ear.

I just got a Timmy pedal and it sounds awesome through the Z Wreck or any of my Z's as well. The Timmy is very transparent which allows the Z Wreck to sound just like it does cranked at volumes that won't make your bandmates mad.
