Congrats on acquiring a great amp, possibly the best amp you've ever owned. Is an exceptional tool for making music.

otay, then - impressions after a couple of days and some varied experiments -
first thoughts were that this amp gives you no place to hide - every clam and missed pick or missed fret is advertised for you and everyone you know to hear. er, i mean, very touch sensitive! :-). and also that the chime and glassiness and cleans are off the charts - absolutely world-class. haven't changed my mind about any of that, but some further experiments added more impressions.
playing quietly in a highly exposed way (i.e., recording, maybe) makes setting the amp for maximum goodness very, um, challenging. what works for one guitar for one style won't necessarily work for another guitar or style. everything you do *matters* - not an easy set'n'forget kinda thing. on the other hand, in a more wild'n'wooly setup - like, with a buncha guys in a garage - the z is much more forgiving.
cabs? can't wait for the stock speakers to break in. but in the meantime, a pair of vintage vox alnico silver bells in a small 2-12 cab sound like the rawk angels singing. flat out O.M.G. material. and a single cele gold in a 1-12 rocks hard too.
guitars? so far, everything works, but a mahogany chapin hawk with PAF-style pickups has an elegant roar thru the rig that cannot be beat. solid numbah two is a strat-style with lipsticks. or maybe that's numbah one. or two. yeah, numbah two. maybe...
pedals. yes please. a tim, a colorsound fuzz, and a wah all do the trick just fine, thank you. especially at band practice today when i forgot to bring my attenuator and needed some grind at more manageable volumes. because make no mistake - the z-wreck is a loud mofo. when you can get it percolating - about 2-o'clock on the vol - pedals would be blasphemy. but at lower volumes, you need help to get the hair around the notes.
style-wise, i'm not brad paisley. i'm a a bluz-roots-classic rocker thru'n'thru. the z-wreck works for all of that.
verdict (so far): aw yeah... :-)
further impressions as they occur...

alrighty then - a clip (at long last) - a very ruff mix of the solo section from a song i'm working on. this isn't going to be the actual solo used, but it's in the neighborhood of what i'm trying to accomplish with it. recorded on the new Z-Wreck thru a Fane Alnico 12" (there were logistical reasons why it wasn't the Z-Cab) by way of a Chapin Hawk with Holmes PAF-style pickups - a guitar we refer to as "the SG killer", to give you a sense of it. while i think of it, the rhythm parts are a Chapin Stratahoula with lipsticks thru the Z as well, with a subliminal Ric 12 thru the Z for the chimy chord at the end of each line. some delay added in post - the "talent" knob - but otherwise unsweetened. tempusfugitives.articulateimages.com/GearClips/ThreeSides_ZWreckClip.mp3enjoy, if possible - d.o.c.

in case anyone's interested, here's where we finally ended up with the song: www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=10312425&q=hi&newref=1i go back and forth on whether or not i like the performance, but i'm quite content with the tone. z-wreck plus chapin stratahoula with lipstick pickups for the rhythm parts, plus ric 12 for the chimy bits at the end of each line, plus chapin hawk (the idiot-caster, because two idiots had it and sold it before i got my hands on it) for the leads and solos. for the solo bits, z-wreck into a 2-12 with vintage alnico vox silver bells thru a telefunken m80 dynamic mic, for you recording geeks. anyhow, a bit of a soap opera getting it recorded, but it's done, and it's time to figure out what the next one will be.

one good thing about the economy being in the state it's in: an under-employed guitar-playing friend has been beating on the cab for me to get some hours on the speakers while i'm stuck at work all day. now the combination of the z-wreck and the no longer brand new cab are going from shiny to burnished as they break in, and are all the sweeter because of it. band practice this afternoon was a delight...
