Hello, I'm new to this board. I just picked up a used RT66 and it probably could use a new set of tubes all around. Currently, it has the Groove Tube KT66HP #4 in there. This tube sounds heavy in the mids and pretty thick, so I'm leaning towards picking up a set of the Gold Lions.
The EF86 is really the one that I'm unsure of. It currently has a Winged C in it. Dr. Z currently suggests the RFT EF86/6267 in the tube set sold at the The Tube Store. I'm considering either this or the NOS Tesla which is more money. Doug at Doug's Tubes recommended the NOS Tesla for situations like recording where you can really hear the sonic differences and keep an EH EF86 in there for live applications when the amp will get used the most as they are more affordable. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I'm new to this amp.
For the 12ax7, I figure sticking with the Sovtek LPS is a good choice, but any other suggestions are welcome.
And for the rectifier, I'm using a Sovtek GZ34.
What are your thoughts?
Best, M

mar, welcome to the board. Congrats on the new purchase.
Gold Lions are nice. You should be pleased with the results. If the Svetlana is not microphonic I would say its a keeper. Any of the other recommended EF86s should be top notch as well. Doug is great to work with. And the Tube Store gets some love around here too.
A balanced 12ax7-lps is what a lot of 66 users go with.
Nothing wrong with the Sovtek GZ34 either. My personal preference was NOS for a rectifier. I have not had any problems with one since installation.
Good luck. Keep us updated.

Hi Doug, Thanks for your reply. The winged C is slightly microphonic. It rings a little on some of the notes. It's not severe, but noticeable when in the bedroom. I use this amp alot for work. I usually gig three to five nights a week with it so I need something sturdy and reliable... that sounds good as well. So, it's either another winged C, NOS Tesla, or the RFT German NOS that Dr. Z is currently using in these amps. Which do you prefer? I find this amp to be a little dark and accentuates the mids, so I maybe the Tesla would brighten it up a bit?

I've used the NOS Tesla, Dario mini-watt and Winged C. I liked them all equally. Doug at Doug's tubes would be a good one to ask about which one would brighten the amp a bit. I thought the Gold Lions were darker than the Shuguangs so that might be an option for you to brighten the amp. YMMV. A forum member here has done some samples using different tubes. That might help you. mbsb.psy.umu.se/clips/clips.html If you scroll down to where the script is red you can hear him try out several tube configurations.

I just installed the tube replacement set that the Doc recommended at the Tube Store. Very happy with the way the amp sounds.

How do you like the 5u4? did it come with the 5U4 or did you switch it? If so, did you re-bias?
Thanks... I have the Gz34 and wonder what it would be like to switch.. I actually wound up living a few blocks from the Tube Store, so I have easy access lol.

I'm looking forward to checking out the Gold Lions. Once I get the right speakers paired up with this amp, I'm pretty sure I'll be quite happy with the amp.
