Hey Kids,
On a whim, I made a deal and picked up a red Monza head last week.
I dig it.
As everyone has noted, clean headroom isn't it's selling point, but I definitely love the feel and dynamics of the gain.
Only gig last week was a Rockabilly dance, where I'm the only guitar player, so I wasn't sure if it would work, but since I was eager to try the new toy, I took it anyway. Upright bass, cocktail drum kit, me, three chick harmony singers.......fun band, but not very loud.
Well, with a 1x12 open cab and an Airbrake (two clicks), I ran the Monz at @ 9 oClock each on the Vol and Gain, and worked the volume on my Gretsch. Never got CLEAN cleans, but it worked, and sounded stellar when I wanted to dig in. Also ran a ZVex Box of Rock for occasional boost and heavier OD, which was terrific.....but only used very sparingly.
So, that's about as much clean as I ever need, and it worked.
Good deal.
MonzaBilly........who knew?

Cool, daddy-o. Did you run a bit of slapback?
Congrats on the amp!

Couple solo snippets from the RockaFillys gig this past weekend. Big, awful sounding gymnasium, and bad recorder placement (too much me). Gretsch w/TV Jones Classics ----> cheapy Ibanez DE-7 slapback-----> Monza. Two short excerpts......1st shows the cleanish side on a Collins Kids song "Hop, Skip and Jump", and the second is a wee bit more cranked on a second (slighty out of control) solo on "Rock This Town". Hope you like seafood, 'cause the CLAMS are on the house! www.jimfogarty.com/tunes/Fillys-1-28-11-solos.mp3

I wouldn't have guessed it was a Monza in a blind taste test. Shows what the amp can do. Thanks for posting.
