Hi. I've never really felt a need for delay, because 90% of the time I see them implimented in local bands they use it to compensate for a lack of musicality (effects abuse!)...but I digress. I am looking into getting an analog delay, and I was wondering if anyone has tried a Maxon AD-9, perhaps with Analogman mods, and if they have any clips I could listen to. Any suggestions for makes and models is fine too, but I am not looking to spend much over $300 at most. Oh, and has anyone tried the MG That's Echo Folks? I'm planning to use it for lead lines for that 'live' feel (think the echo in "Feel Like Makin' Love" when Mick just unleashes that solo), and maybe also as a reverb substitute. Any thoughts are good P.S. Aruntang I know you are going to suggest the Memory Lane. It looks pretty sweet, but I think it's out of my price range (and it has too many knobs and such. I like to keep it simple )

The AD-900 or 999 is worth checking out too if you want those really warm Mick Ralphs type repeats. The AD-900 ended my long search for a good delay pedal. It's the best I've heard other than my buddy's Fulltone TTE. I know the AD-9 is a good pedal but it might not give you enough delay time (only 300ms).

The AD-9 is good for short delay times. I too would like to find a analog delay with a little longer times (kind of a contradiction in terms). The AD-999 has 3X longer delay times, but around 300 + bucks for either one...OUCH!

Skydog, I agree with you on the overuse/abuse of pedals especially the delays and swirly ones. I bought a Keeley modded AD-9 about a year ago and in my opinion it was just OK. His mods really clean the pedal up and make it true bypass but they still have the inferior chip in them and the tone isn't very good. After about 6 months I decided to replace it . I talked to analog-man (Mike) he said he felt one of the best delays out right now was the New EH Deluxe Memory Man with the good Japanese chips, true-bypass and 550ms of delay. They also use a 24dc power adapter now instead of a direct plug witched solved any noise issues. So I ordered a Deluxe Memory Man ($265.00) and I also ordered a Diamond Memory Lane ($399.00) so I could play them both side by side and send back the one I didn't want. In my opinion it wasn't even close the Deluxe Memory Man sounded better and was a lot easer to use. One of the things I thought I needed was tap tempo but in reality the DMM with its big knobs was easer to use than the tap on the Memory Lane. In the operating manual for the Memory Lane there is almost a whole page dedicated to things that are "Quirky" with the pedal, they could have used two. In fairness to the DML after I sent it back to Musictoys Teddy e-mailed me to say that there was indeed issues with Memory Lane and they were sending that one and a few others back to Diamond to be fixed.

Supposedly the MG echo has 600ms, but I have no references for it.
How long is the delay on the AD-900?

I'm pretty sure it's 600ms. It's just a hair longer than my Memory Man. I love my Memory Man as well but the AD-900 is just a little more "lush" sounding to my ears and it's easier to dial in. Just 3 knobs and you're there. I can never figure out whether or not to use the Chorus or Vibe setting on the MM either.

I would recommend any of the following:
Boss DM3 or DM2 Ibanez AD9 (vintage) Ibanez AD9 (reissue) Maxon AD9
The maxon is probably the most expensive, but its the only one with true bypass, if you like that.

Years ago I was looking at it because it had 3 effects in one, but I didn't pull the trigger because I heard some iffy reviews...I already have a Boss CE-2 which I like alot and so far it's my only non-gain device pedal besides my wah (I currently have one overdrive, one distortion, three fuzzes, and one treble booster). I would only use it for delay. I'm a "one pedal for one sound" kind of guy. For the moment the AD-900 seems like the ticket. I know Analogman can mod them for true bypass (a must for me) and expression pedal jacks for delay time and repeats. Is it worth it for a delay to use expression pedals? Oh and P.S. I run all my pedals in front of the amp. No effects loop on the 45. Thanks for all the advice so far! It might be awhile before I get any more gear so just keep the suggestions comming P.S.S. RC, my band is a bit guilty of effects abuse (not me personally). We have one song where the other guitarist uses a phaser, tremolo, wah pedal, and digital delay all at the same time! It sounds pretty good but I would never....
