As you can tell, I have not posted many messages on this forum however I am a frequent visitor and very interested in the great information and advice. I have owned a Ghia for about a year now and really love it (head with open back single 12 cab). My other amps are vintage Fenders however the Ghia has evolved into my go-to amp.
I am a bit of a tweaker and enjoy trying different tubes and speakers to try and maximize tone. On the speaker front I have tried 4 different speakers in the Ghia including a V30, Weber Blue Dog, Eminence and a Weber 12F150. They all sounded great with each having its own advantage and disadvantage however I always had a question mark about the Celestion Blue in the back of my mind, especially given the strong endorsements by Myles and Dr. Z. I finally convinced myself to spring for one (by the way, they have come down in price) and I must tell you that what you hear about them is absolutely true. This is a fantastic speaker and in my opinion could not be a better match for the Ghia! I am horrible at describing tone however finally my guitars are sounding the way I think they should. My Strat and Tele tone reminds me of Jim Messina on the old Loggins and Messina albums (one of the most under rated guitar players in my opinion). The clarity, spank and snap are all there. Turn up the amp and without a pedal it seems to have the perfect blend of speaker and amp distortion combining into a very fat and smooth overdrive. The speaker is brand new and sounds better and better every time I plug in!
I realize that human nature causes us to speak highly of something we just spent a bunch of money on in an attempt to justify the purchase however this is truely an amazing speaker and I feel quite confident that my speaker swapping in the Ghia is over. Of course, I could get a 2 x 12 cabinet and try a Blue and a..... crap, here I go again.
