I'm going crazy trying to find the correct overdrive/dist/fuzz pedals for my setup. I've got a Carmen Ghia 2x10 and PRS Std 22, a Maxon AD999 delay and a Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe. As far as clean sounds and modulation, I have all I will ever need. However when it comes to dirt, I simply cannot get what I want. This is what I've tried so far to help you: Foxrox ZIM - loved the VT side (that's the overdrive sound I'd like, transparent like turning up the Ghia but without a volume boost), hated the H9 side sounded like a cocked wah overdrive really colored. Baja Tech Da MOAF - too much clipping with the Ghia, but I like the thick sustaining and defined dist/fuzz. Diamond Fireburst - good fuzz, but didn't like the midboost mode. Not that defined. Catalinbread SCOD - hated this pedal sounded awful with the Ghia really colored overdrive. I only want 2 pedals at the most to fufill all dirt duties. Was thinking of a overdrive/fuzz stack, overdrive on first then fuzz to send it over the top. I run the Ghia clean (usually) or with a very little breakup (rarely). I play everything from Tom Petty to Counting Crows to grunge to rock to Hendrix. Please help!!!

I recently got to test drive the Fulltone 69 fuzz pedal. Of all the fuzz pedals I've tried I like the 69 best. I was never a fan of fuzz pedals but the 69 is a good sounding pedal.

Right now I'm using a Clark Gainster for a mild overdrive and a Pharaoh Sweet Cheetah II for brutal, Plexi style high gain. They also work very well in combination, and the Pharaoh in particular cleans up well.
The OCD is a pretty good all in one gain pedal that has a lot of grind but dials back well. Tim Jauernig makes a pedal called the Diabolical Gristle Tone Manipulator that rules for mild to more than moderate overdrive. Dave Barber's Direct Drive pedals are good too. And a dark horse for high gain is the HAO Rust Driver. One knob, and it only does that massive plexi thing, but it does it well.
Right now if you have access, look for the Sweet Cheetah II and the Clark. I'm real pleased right now with those, and I'm using my Ghia 95 percent of the time. They sound well matched.

I've found that my Keeley BD2 along with the Keeley TS9, or the Fulldrive 2. either separately or together covers alot of dirt ground, from just breaking up, to fairly saturated and chunky, depending on your pickups. I also use a Keeley compressor, and an Addrock Boostmaster (wouldn't play without this pedal)!

I have a BB preamp and I love it, but its got a softer edge to its sound. I love it for its smootheness and definition. For heavy, crunchy sounds I use a MI Audio Crunch Box, which is both cheap and useful thusfar.
For fuzz, I personally love my BSM Tonebender. It has a Fuzzface and Tonebender MK I in it (germanium transistors). It is for vintage purists though, so it may not be versitile enough for you. I would suggest trying one before buying, but they are quite hard to find unfortunately.

You mentioned Tom Petty. Mike Campbell uses a Dan Electro Daddy-O. I bought one because of this and it sounded like crap with 9 of the amps I own. Well with the 10th amp, my Ghia, it sounds fantastic. I can get the exact tone of Running Down A Dream with the Ghia and the Daddy-O. These things are only $25 used. It is worth a shot, maybe you will like it. I own several botique pedals but I reach for the Daddy-O when my Ghia comes out to play.

Man were in maybe one of the most subjective areas ever here! Its soo hard to make pedal rec's, other than to compile a list of ideas to seek out and try for yourself, or do like ive done , and thats to just resign myself to the fact that i'm probably going to lose a little each time i buy one, find it doesnt fit and then immediately e-bay it and try another. Its cost me a bit but it has also allowed me to go thru a great many pedals in a relatively short period of time, and not spend my life driving around to music stores, where ya cant really tell anyway till ya get it home and really turn it up!
That being said, it seems the O/D world falls into two basic groups, Tube screamer types and NON screamer types, and theres a ton of each out there that are cool, but unfortunately what i like you may hate and so on, so i think there been a bunch of great pedals mentioned for you to seek out and try. I will say in regard to the fuzz, i did find the Lovepedal Karl the most usable fuzz ive tried, it has almost a distortion quality about it blended with fuzz making it very usable as opposed to a lot of fuzz's which are kinda one trick pony's, IMO. Best of luck in the search!

I've found the Barber and Menatone OD/Dist pedals to be a great match w/ the Ghia (LTD, Direct Drive, Red Snapper, Blue Collar). I haven't tried any fuzzes yet though...
