I just got my maz jr. last week and discovered my Boss DS-1 doesn't sound as good as I thought it did when I was using it through a cheap amp. So I was wondering if getting it modded by Keeley or Analogman was worth it, or if a new pedal (i.e. Xotic BB preamp) was the way to go? Is one mod better than the other? I'm looking for a general classic rock sound (Allman Brothers/Zeppelin etc.). Thanks!

I'll mostly be using it for lead.

Ok, here's the break down as I see/hear it. Keeley DS-1 very much like the stock version but a little more refined, not as trebly and brittle. AM DS-1 nothing like the stock version, more mids, same bottom, a nice chunk to it. The AM version is more apples and oranges from the stock version. And the Keeley is more like Red and Green apples. As for the BB, it's a cool box. Sounds great with a cranked Maz Jr. A little too smooth at times for my taste, but worth keeping around. If you're handy with a soldering iron there is always the Monte Alums mods for the DS-1. I recently sold both my AM and Keeley DS-1's and the BB is on a shelf. So what do I know?

Thanks for the info Lefty. Is there a pedal you would recommend checking out that goes good with maz jr?

Oh God, there are SO many that sound good with the Maz Jr. it's just a matter of choice and what tones you want to get. Hell, even my Tubscreamer sounds GREAT with my Maz. What kind of tone(s) are you trying to get? The OCD is a great one, so is the FD2, Keeley BD2 is good. The BB is good, AC is good, it's the amp that makes them sound so good.
I see your in Denver, shoot on over to Guitar X and don't forget your credit card!! Gary has ALOT of great pedals you can try out. I try to hit it every time I go to Denver. And always seem to leave a little poorer. He has the Keeley stuff too, MJM, and a whole slew of others.

That sounds good. I've never been to Guitar X for some reason, although I've wanted too. Now I have a good reason. Thanks for the heads up. I have a feeling my wallet will be a little lighter when I leave there, but my ears will be happier!

And Gary has always been good about returns too, even after I take 'em back to the Springs!!

I wouldn't bother mod'ing. Like Lefty said, there are a lot of good ovd pedals out there. OCD, Sparkle Drive, Zendrive, TS9, Timmy etc...

Well I would say that the Maz Jr. sounds or makes most anything sound pretty darn good.. I use my Keeley TS9 and the Ds-1 for either mild overdrive or some good chunk and grind. I have used either one for the sounds you are talking about for solo's and for rhythm playing.. Can't go wrong either way just fiddle with the knobs and you can always find a good sounding setting.
