I figure that with the specs of the V30, it would be a good match for the 66... anyone have thoughts on this? Experience?

I tried one with my Maz 38. Didn't much care for it. By the time I got my Route 66 the Vintage was long gone. I am not sure that I gave the vintage much of a chance to even break in though. So you might have a different experience with it. I have heard that they sound better with higher wattage amps, 50 watts and up.
Good luck.

I tried a 2x12 with v30s in it with my route 66... I would say it was just "ok"... Everyone seems to combine the v30 w/ the g12h30... the V30 has a mid hump that slightly gets on my nerves...
I recently went through a whole bunch of speakers and speaker combinations in a 2x12 cab.. I tried 2 g12h30s, 2 v30s, combinations of the two.. also a g12h30 and a weber alnico blue dog, and finally a weber alnico blue dog and alnico silver bell combined... I settled on the blue dog/silver bell combo... I have realized that I love alnico speakers... I have used 2 celestion blues with vox ac30 for the last 10 years so Im accustomed to them i guess.
Im very happy with my current combo.
I would really experiment with different speakers if you can.. they make a HUGE difference, even more so when with a band.
good luck

Thanks... I went and tried the combination out, and though the speaker was new, it didn't grab me either. I thought that it sounded pretty good with a Telecaster, but awful with a Les Paul... again, it's a brand new speaker, but I couldn't see it breaking in enough to work for me... I do have a 212 with Alnico Blues that I should try still, but would require bringing my cab down to the store... hmmm... may not be a bad idea... I love the cab with my Ghia, I'll report back if I do.
Thanks again..

I did not like the V30 when I had my 66.
The 66 is a bit of a mid heavy amp....and the V30 has such an upper mid honk. The two of them together was just too much midrange. Perhaps in a closed back cab would be better, but when I tried it, it was an openback.
My favorite speaker with the 66 is the G12H-30. Recessed mids and sparkly highs is a good fit for a mid heavy amp like the 66.

Agree with John on this. I use the G12H30 as a single speaker and toss in the Blue for a second when I feel like playing loud. Amazed by the tone it puts out. Wish I played better since it really highlights my imperfect technique:)

I liked the sound of g12h, but i had the chinese ones and they were taking forever to break in... i was killing my bandmates with the high end... they were literally dodging out of the way of my solos lol!!!
I have two g12h's that i could sell if anyones interested...

one more thing about the g12h30... when using humbuckers, did you guys not find it a little muddy in the low end? When paired with the already thick route 66, of course. I found it really bassy/too bassy in a closed back with my es335... it was better in an open back.

DC here! I can only speak for my DR-Z cab with the removable back panel - 2x10" cab. With my Warmoth Telecaster ( with Seymour Duncan Vintage stacks). Withe the backplate removed - >kind of open back config - you have a slightly lower volume 3-4 dB:s - you have more low mids - you have less low end bass and you have less tight low end bass. With the backend in place - you have more volume about 3-4 dB:s you have less low mid hump - you have deeper low end bass - and quite a bit tighter low end bass too. A more evenly balanced sound to my ears - I like the this cab closed more than open - YMMV I realize of course - apart from personal preferences - there is no need to assume that the Dr-Z in-house 10" speakers - need to share much sonic similarities the the Celestion models under discussion. However I suspect the influence of the the cab - closed or open may have a bearing on what you perceive soundwise. Cheers: Dixiechicken!

G12 h30 alone is great... when I want 2 x12 I add a V30 in a Mesa Theil cab and it's a great combo

Stock Z-Best 2x12!!! Made for the 66. The more you play it the better it sounds.
