every Monza clip I watch makes me realize how much I have been chasing the Cheap Sunglasses tone without even realizing it.
Shazam. I could have had a V-8. What an epiphany. What a country! How have Zs been in my blind spot for so long? Bought my 1st Z amp 2 months ago. Hardly knew Dr. Z amps even existed. When the Z Store opens again from the holidays, I will be ordering my 3rd.
man, ZZ Top is so great though, ya know? I don't think I've ever been this excited about getting a piece of gear, or a piece of most anything else either.

Curt's call on hearing the (then) new Monza at Zfest '09: 'Billy in a box.' Purty dang close I'd say.

thanks B-dub; hey, happy new year man! I think I heard some Led Zep I there toward the end!
yeah. I really don't think it's my imagination, but in these Monza 110 clips I'm hearing Eliminator tones, Tres Hombres and Deguello tones, and yummiest of all, some Rhythmeen. I'm gonna listen to some Rhythmeen and newer ZZ right effin now.
but I started this thread because at some point I heard that magical deep warthog grunt that Billy has right when he starts the 2nd lead break on Cheap Sunglasses, where he comes in low and dark on the top string, with those little 1/4-step blues curls: bwop, bwop bop-ba-doop, bwahdoooo-o-oo! ... you know what I'm sayin'?
but I have to wait.

I hear ya talkin'. Love that tune, and that record. If I'm not mistaken, and if he wasn't tellin' stories as usual, I bleeve Billy has said in print that that solo he switched to a (Mark) Erlewine Automatic, I remember when Mark was buildin' 'em fer Billy, single 'bucker, mahogany/maple, strat shape, single slide pot volume control on the upper side bout so they didn't have to mount it on the top, and a 'Wine-0-Matic' bridge. I have photos some where of one w/ 'International Harvester' inlaid in abalone on the 'board. Only Billy.

My Billy Box is imminently incoming immediately in the morning; take cover. Not sure if I'm getting any sleep tonight though, too excited and too big of a day today. Rains it pours and so forth. Might have to catch a nap on the morrow, before I try and beat the masses. I'll take over the world after that.

All I can say is that the first time I opened the shipping box and plugged my new Monza into my Set Neck and Z-Best I laughed out loud. A lot. I kept laughing for about 30 minutes if I remember correctly. There's so many shades of crunch available from just your guitar's volume control and fingers. I think it's the best crunch tone I've had in my 30 years of playing. I know it's the most fun I have playing any amp, even over the MAZ 18 or Ghia or Stingray, to name a few. It just seems to do exactly what your mind is thinking. Just think "feedback", hold the guitar toward the speaker, and there it is. It may not be for absolutely everyone but I would think that any fan of crunchy or overdriven tones would love it.

Mike (aka currently as pvfan?) seems to have had some problems with the amp he received.
In addition to the crunch you mention, Phil, I also enjoy the Monza clean (volume at 9) without attenuation through a bright, efficient speaker.
