I put a matched pair of NOS Mullard EL-84's in my Ghia and WOW do they ever sound great. Made a big difference in an amp that was already fantastic sounding. Earlier break-up, more clarity, smoother sounding sustain and natural overdrive.
Anyone else using them? They are expensive but whoa do they sound great

I just have some garden variety JJs in mine. Anything that sounded better would have me constantly messing myself...

The only NOS EL84's i've tried were GE's. They were very good. Sound was on a par with the EL84 S and much less mechanical noise than most of the new ones.

I purchased a used ghia that came with a fresh set of JJ's. After about a month a replaced them with a new set of GT Gold el84s. What a difference!!! Then I tried both #3 & 7 GT Gold and IMO the breakup on both output tubes sounded so much better than what was in the amp. JJs are excellent tubes but the difference is how the output tubes are matched. GT does a good job of matching tubes and are less that NOS.

The Mullard EL-84's are the creamiest EL-84's in a Ghia. With their broad mid response the TONE control is some much more active. Cleans are well defined with the touch of swirl around the notes. Extremely balanced. Easy to drive into sweet distortion. No high end harshness, with broad wide rear ( I mean bottom end, sorry I got caught up .... ) . They do add a degree of richness to the Ghia, BUT be careful as various years of production have yielded slightly different toned EL-84's. Mike at KCA is a better historian them I. Also with the low Plate voltage of the Ghia ( approx 310 V ) the Mullards will last a VERY long time , many years, so the cost isn't that bad. DR.Z

I recently put a set of Mullard in mine. I had Telefunkens in it before. I like the Mullards and they do add that creamy sweet distored sound. I am debating if I like them the best for me and my style or not right now. I play fairly clean traditional blues. I haven't switched the preamp tubes around yet but I will before I make any decisions.
