Hi Guys,
I am a newbie here but I have owned and performed with many Dr Z amps over the years.
My current set-up is a MAZ 18 R set for my cleans and a Monza 12 for crunch. It has a BL as well. But there is too much crunch. I love my angry little varmant, but the Monza seems to go from 0-12 crunch wise w/ nothing in between. (I owned a plexi years ago that went from "zero" directly to "balls to the walls" the same way!)
Love the Monza, but I must tame it a little! Please help; alt. tubes, tube-types, mods, etc if this subject has been "worked to death", sorry, blame it on a newbie question

Here's mine tamed no attenuation and at conversation level using an OD pedal to gas it due to the volume almost be'n off hehe. You can here me plucking the strings its that quiet. Using an EC1000 with 81/60 actives too...
Untamed with a Strat HSS into a 112 Veteran 30 beating the Flip cam up...

Why did those adds show up...? Can I get rid of them?

at about 9 to 10 oclock on the volume I start to break up, you should be able find something tammer in that range and use the brake lite to get the volume you want, you can try rolling the volume back just a tad too Todd

Oh yeah my point for posting my vids were to show volume can be tamed without attenuation which I for one won't use on my Monza due to how much I like the tone open...not restricted or choked a bit. Others don't seem to mind that though.
I wasn't trying to get a cleaner tone which is easy IMO once you play with volume, drive and guitar volume. Usually I will run my volume around 10am, drive about 10 am and then do final adjustments with guitar roll off. Can get some decent cleans no prob with plenty of headroom. I prefer my cleans with a bit of hair on them anyways...

Hi, You might consider power scaling the power section on the Monza. This was a saving grace for me, with regard to both volume and gain. By varying the voltage in the power section, you can create a HUGE palate of tones to choose from at virtually any volume level - totally negates the need for tone sucking passive attenuation. The mod is relatively simple to do if you know your way around an amp, and fairly inexpensive for a tech to do if not. Hope this helps!

Buy a 12DW7 from JJ or the like. Instead of going all the way to dual tube with lower gain, the 12DW7 is configured as a 12ax7 for one triode, and a 12au7 for the second. This will tame truly only one gain stage. Can't say where I'd recommend putting it as I don't know the tube configuration in there or the schematic. But it could be fun. Just avoid putting one in the phase inverter section, outside of 'for kicks.'
Otherwise, a good 12AT7 might be a good choice - 2 60x gain stages, to the 12ax7s potential 2 100x gain stages.
Likewise, if you do want to tame the gain, a 12AT7 or a 12AU7 in the phase inverter could be interesting - if it's a long tail pair type phase inverter, it's both a gain stage and a driver... so a lower gain tube would make it more of a driver and less intense of a gain stage.

If you put a NOS 5751 in V2 of a Monza how would it affect the performance

Hello all! New to the forum and new to Dr Z amps! Thought I would add to this thread with how I tamed my Monza 2x10. Xotic RC Booster - yes I tamed mine with this great pedal. Monza volume at 9 o'clock, drive at noon, tone at 10:30, brakelite on 2. Then RC Booster is set volume at around 9 o'clock, gain around 9 (helps add warmth to me) then treble and bass to taste. From there I use my guitar volume knob and it works great. No it is not Fender clean but a lot more chimey then guitar direct to amp and at a volume that I can use in a lot more situations. My PRS Mira works incredible with the Monza and these settings. When the situation calls for a little more drive and volume I can either turn off the RC Booster and run direct or kick on my Fulltone OCD and rock the house.
