Anybody give one of these a real listen? I did briefly when they first came out. At that point I thought it had potential but I let the $40 price keep me from listening seriously.

I had one. It was a nice pedal. Not a lot of gain though. Sold it when I got my power screamer. Here is a clip I did using it with my PRS and Maz Jr. The gain is maxed. The tune is a fusion thing so not everyone's cup of tea. Also, I'm using the neck pickup (Dragon 1s). Country Shawn (on this forum but haven't heard from in awhile) raves about his. media.putfile.com/smoothbluesPRSneck

gary: Where do all those notes come from? I don't think my guitar has them! Sound was actually very good. If I used one I would have the gain very low to off anyway. Since I have to play less notes i try to make up with style, what little I've got! I think lower gain has more of the players personality show thru. That's why I don't use much. You understand I'm not dissing anyone that does. It's just what I happen to do that works for me. You got the chops, man!

Thanks Billy. The chords and progression in that tune pretty well dictated some atonal sounding scales/modes and I did kind of overplay on that (as I do a lot).
The Bad Monkey is a great deal and a great little pedal. It's tube screamer based but has a bass and treble control for better tone shaping. My power screamer has the same basic sound (but more variability) which is the only reason why I sold it.

I had heard a lot of good things about the Bad Monkey, and then on Ebay, I saw a modded version for a few dollars more, from Humphrey Audio. I took a chance and ordered it, and it sounded okay, but I wasn't so sure about it. I didn't have my rig quite finished, waiting for speakers for my cab, and bumblebee capacitors for my LP.
After that was all in place, I plugged it in again, and did some serious knob turning, and WOW what a sound. I'm using a Digitech Tone Driver for my blues crunch, and with them together, they get that sound that's only been in my head until now. I bought a Maz 18 this spring, and it's a great sounding head. I didn't think I could get it to sound even better.
I'm not sure that the modded Bad Monkey is for everyone, but I know that I am extremely pleased.
Rock on.................weedman

I'm not sure that the [Humphrey Audio] modded Bad Monkey is for everyone, but I know that I am extremely pleased. I have one of these and would agree with your statement. I've sent mine back to have him tweak it a bit. It is a tad on the dark side to my ears. But, I do know several players who love the modded version as is. While I'm at it, I have his modded CS-3 compressor, which I love! I sold my Barber TonePress after getting this one. The TonePress is no "dog" by any means, and I would consider it next in line. All IMHO. Ray K.

I think you could make the nastiest pedal out there sound good. Thanks for the clip and some Karma for you. Steve

They're pretty nice. Especially for the money. But, don't buy one thinking your getting a Keeley/Menatone/Analogman etc. It's definately the sleeper pedal in the digi line.
As garyh said, low gain like a tube screamer but with treble/bass controls. Allows you the ability to tweak. I have 2 now...one NIB since they're so nicely priced and one out for use.
Definately worth the $40.
Oh yeah, billyguitar, forgot your in KC. Funkymunky music sells them for $35-39...can't remember exactly, but was really cheap. They usually don't have them in stock long if at all since they also sell them on eBay at that pricepoint.

karma to you weedman for your $.02 if you're going to give it out, you should get some back. Thanks Dan, for the Karma.......I see you're with Johnny Lee at Windsor, Illinois in August. It's only 12 miles down the road from me, so I'll be over to see ya. I played that gig in '86 with the late, great Sheb Wooley, it's a really fun time. Thanks again...............weedman www.bigdaddyweed.com
