It's time to retube my Rt. 66. I have the Genalex Gold Lions in there now. Would these be the current tubes of choice? The others that I see that are available are the Chinese Shuguang.
I got about 6 months of heavy use from the Genalexs before one went bad and I started blowing fuses. Does that sound about right? I like the sound of them ok, just wondering if there were any better choices.

If you can find the original Genelex, they would be a good choice. Very pricey though. The original Route 66 was designed for GT's KT66HPs. So if you can find any of them in the 5-6 rating, that would be good. They don't make the GTs any more so they are hard to find. The best NEW stock KT66s would seem to be the Gold Lions or the Shuguangs. I think JJ and Ruby might make KT66s also but have not heard too many good things about either. There are also other KT66s which are a cheaper version of the Chinese Shuguangs. Taste in tubes are like tastes in foods. You have to experiment to see what you like.
The thing about tubes is they are a lot like light bulbs. A new set could go bad right out of the box. A reliable tube dealer will have a good warranty on their tubes with a replacement policy for bad tubes.
I've used KCA NOS Tubes, Doug's Tubes, Lord Valve, and Tube Depot all with good results. I personally like the new Gold Lions, but I have a set of Shuguangs ready to replace them, when the Lions go bad, for a change of pace.
Hope that helps some.

+1 on the Gold Lions. Replaced original JJ's with them and it made a BIG difference! Really sound great! I haven't tried the Shuguangs?

DC here! I put the Shuagangs in a couple of months ago - when one of my G.E.C NOS went "kaput". They sound fine too me - not much of a difference to the G.E.C:s to my ears. Cheers: Dixiechicken!

I think I read somewhere that DRZ believes the same thing, dixichicken. That's good to know. Can't wait to get a taste

DC here!
Thats just about right "doc001" - DR-Z also said that the original G.E.C: do sound fine but - that they are also rather weak in the construction (structurally wise) he did NOT recommend them for his amps - due to wear and tear on the road/rehearsal studios - as it were.
( I emailed DR-Z about it when my NOS G.E.C - went on the blink )
The NOS G.E.C:s are fine for home stereo use where you dont move the amp around.
Cheers: Dixiechicken!

Thanks guys. I've been traveling a lot and I didn't want to miss the package so it's until now for me to order. Fedex is bringing me some Gold Lions today! I appreciate all the input!

Let us know what you think about the GLs once you get to try them out.
