I own a Ghia 1 x 12 combo with the Vintage 30.
If I swapped it out for the Celestion Blue, what would the tonal differences be?
I play a Les Paul R7 through the amp if that helps.
Can someone compare/contrast the two for me?
Thanks!

The blue has a bit less midrange emphasis, more pleasant highs and lots more speaker breakup, especially on the low notes. The bottom doesn't flap out, but it is much more compressed.
It is a great sound with the ghia. You lose a bit of punch, headroom and the strong midrange emphasis, but the sound is so nice and smooth, its worth the big bucks. You can play it all night and it is never grating or harsh.

I recently A/B'd the two side by side in a rehearsal and noticed the Vintage 30's punch was quite handy when snapping out low notes, and making them heard. The alnico has less ability to stay focused on hard hitting low notes because of the speaker compression. Bottom line, there are trade offs with all speakers...none will do it all. Given the choice of the two with a Ghia, and considering my style of picking, I'd probably opt to go with the Vintage 30.

I always ran a V30 with my Ghia. I'll have a new Ghia today or Monday and I'll see if I still feel the same. I have a nice assortment of speakers to play test.
Again, playing small and med. bars covering old country, blues, classic and southern rock type tones with a Tele and a Strat, a Ghia and a V30 with a Keeley BD-2 worked well for me.

I just got a 2X12 65amps cab and it comes loaded with a Blue and a G12H30. Everyone so far is right on about the comparisons of the Blue/V30. I personally feel the G12H30 is a good speaker that might work for ya if you need the snap and punch that Madison was mentioning and still want some chime without the midrange hump of the V30. Scumback makes a nice version, the H75, I'm thinking about getting one as I am falling in love with the G12H30 with every amp I own. Jason

I've only had one for a short while in a Top Hat 1x12 cab but it sounds really nice with every amp I've tried it with.

I have a 65 Amps 2 x 12 cabinet I am selling right now. I toyed with the idea of swapping the Blue for the V30, but wanted to know what to expect before I did that. I got in touch with Jim over at Southbay and it looks like I will try the H75 in place of the V30 as well. Seems to be what I am looking for. The V30 is a nice speaker, just not what I am looking for tonewise. My fear was that if I liked the Blue in there too much, I wouldnt be able to sell the cabinet in original condition. Plus the Blue is mighty expensive for a 12 inch speaker. I just got a 2X12 65amps cab and it comes loaded with a Blue and a G12H30. Everyone so far is right on about the comparisons of the Blue/V30. mjr, there's only one way to find out! Throw that speaker in there and give it a try, just make sure you match impedance. You can always switch them back later. I've heard that the blue w/ a ghia is VERY nice indeed. If you don't like it you'll be able to buy the Scumback knowing that you tried you other options first. Jason

To those that have experience with a Ghia and a Celestion Blue, would you describe the tone as fat, round and/or warm? Or is it more a matter of using he tone knob to achieve a fat/round/warm tone regardless of speaker used? Thx.

JMHO but I like the G12H30 because it covers all of the sound spectrum really well, and the bass notes are there but do not get flabby. Pair it with a V30 and it makes it even better.

I have a Ghia head and 1 X 12 cabinet and have just ordered a Blue for it. I also have a Weber Blue Dog so it will be interesting to A/B them. Lots of good speaker choices out there however I think both Myles and Z recommend the Blue as the ultimate speaker for the Ghia. I don't think I can argue with an endorsement like this! Should have mine in a week or so.
