Well........ I have come full circle gentleman. My first ever Z was a black Rt 66 back in 2003. Had it for about 9 months and traded for a Maz 18 2/12, Galaxie, Maz GT, V1 Maz and now back to the Rt 66 (also enjoyed a few non-Z amps in between there also). I am excited to be returning to the Rt 66 as I remember it making my Strat sound soooooo good! I have a Vox open back 2/12 with C Blues ready to go and the amp should arrive next Monday. It's an older one made in 1999 and looks pretty cool. Blonde: silver corners, brown cloth front and a gold faceplate with round knobs. Question. I know V1 has the Ef86 in it and V2 has a 12ax7. Can V2 take an EF86 also to add more gain? Well, it's going to be a long week! HAPPY THANKSGIVING Z--BROTHERS!

Welcome back. It's hard top stay away from the route 66 tones. They are addicting.
The answer to your question about V2 is, no. A 12ax7 and an ef86 are not interchangeable.

Thanks! I was afraid of that but thought I would ask anyway. I have a BK Butler Tube Driver for more gain but I was not really crazy about how it sounded when I ran it through my V1 Mazerati. It seems from these threads that the Rt 66 takes pedals well, so I remain optimistic. The Butler absolutely shines through my Cornford MK50 head. I don't need it for gain because there is no shortage in the MK50, but it does give me that E.J. violin type tone that is so sweet. Thanks again, Merks

You're welcome.
I'd love to try a tube driver through my 66.

Hey Doug..... just noticed you are from my old stomping ground of upstate N.Y. (Buffalo 25 years). I'm in Florida now (20 plus years) and still miss the wings and pizza! Listen, I see the Rt 66 is rated at 32 watts. My Blues are going to give me 30, any danger of them blowing if I decided to dime this bad boy when it arrives next Tuesday? It's only two extra watts and I would think when a speaker is designed they would rate it at the low end to allow for a little extra push? I have a Alessandro "Muzzle" but if I can I will always run an amp unattenuated. Also, I have no experience with fuzz pedals. What's the difference between a fuzz and distortion pedal? Any fuzz recommendations? Thanks for any input and Happy Thanksgiving!

I have run the route 66 through the blues in my ac30 cab and it was fine, but I used an airbrake at 1 or 2 clicks... I think it would be ok to run it through it if you werent blasting it, but I have both an AC 30 and a route... the route is rated at 32 and the ac30 is rated at 33watts... To me the Route is louder, and more punchy... I talked to the guy that I bought my Route 66 from, he's an amp builder himself, and he told me there's no way that the Route 66 is really only 32 watts.. he went into a whole bunch of facts regarding the KT66 tubes and the rectifier and said it was more in the 60 watt range...
I think if you were to put the 5U4 rectifier (which is stock now) in there you would be fine with the blues because it makes the route more like its actual rating.
I personally love the alnico sound myself and just bought a weber alnico Blue Dog and Silver Bell combo... right now the blue dog is matched with my G12h30 and the Silver Bell is on a Fed Ex truck... I will let you know when it arrives, they say the 29th!... For what its worth I read a post where Ted Weber recommended this pair for the Route 66.

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure what my Rt 66 has in it but from what I read the 5U4 seems to be the favorite here on the forum. If it has the 5U4 in it can I run the Rt 66 wide open with the Blues unattenuated? BTW, how much are a pair of Blue & Silver bells? Do you have the 30 or 50 watt versions? Merks

Merks,
The Route 66 is my 2nd DRZ amp, and I've only ever used it with an Eminence Private Jack or a Celestion G12-65, which are 50 and 65 watts respectively. My 1st DRZ was a Maz 38 head. The matching 1x12 cabinet came loaded with a Celestion 70th Anniversary G12H-30. I never had any problems playing at loud volumes. Of course most the time when I played the volume never got above 10 o'clock with the pre pegged.

Take a peak in the back of the amp at the last tube (farthest to the right when looking from the back) there should be some markings to indicate what type of rectifier it is. I personally have a GZ34 (5AR4) in mine and while I am very interested to try the other tube, i dont feel like taking it to get biased... also I feel like I need the extra clean headroom/volume from the gz34 for my 335.
I dont know whether you could crank it or not... but I personally probably would lol.... I crank my AC30 all time into those blues and have never had a problem.... I have had it for 10 years!
Both the weber alnico silver bell and blue dog are 205.00 each... but there is a sale going on at weber right now, 10% of all speakers.... so it would be a bit cheaper.. you also get a free t-shirt.
I went with the 30 watt versions of each. I went with light doping on the blue dog and "Pre rola" on the silver bell. These were also Ted's recommendations. I found this info in the "Ask the Experts" section of the forum.
Again, I havent tried the blue dog with the silver bell yet, but I will soon enough. The Silver Bell is supposed to be a little more marshally... im guessing its based on the alnico speakers in eric clapton's bluesbreaker from the beano recordings.
The silver bell is supposed to have great bottom end and nice highs, while the blue dog has a nice chimey midrange.
I have been testing out recording techniques with my Route and the Blue dog and so far I really really like it.
I should also note that I am using an open back cab.
Anyways, good luck and I think that if you do have the 5U4 you should be fine, but I am no expert.
I think I have read on this forum that someone blew their celestion blues with the route when it was cranked, so be careful.

Thanks for your input Mark.... I really appreciate it. Looks like the Rt 66 will be here on the 30th! Man I hate having to wait. Let me know how the blue dog and silver bell work out for you. Merks

Well the Rt 66 arrived today and unfortunately all I had time to do was fire it up to make sure it worked...... it did! Tomorrow my wife said she will take the kids shopping for sure and I will have about 2 hours to let her rip. It's going to be my 54 C.S. Strat / B.K. Butler Tube Driver / Rt. 66 / 2/12 open back cab loaded with blues and an attenuator to make sure I don't cry the blues:<) Should be a blast! More to follow after I get better acquainted with my new Blonde! Merks

Well, this bad boy is going nowhere anytime soon! I really cannot believe just how many tones are available in the Rt 66! My need for clean is more than satisfied and my Strat has NEVER sounded better! What a great platform to work with pedals..... and I only have three. My BK Butler Tube Driver, Ibanez AD9 delay and my trusty Chrome Boy Wah-Wah. Between the tone stack on the Rt 66 and my BK Butler I pulled everything from sweet blues to E.J. violin like sustain to ACDC balls to the walls rock and ALMOST believable metal mayhem. Hey one amp can only do so much but the much that it does is pretty freaken sweet. Yea, I finally found a great companion for my Cornford MK50. Also, It was great attenuated.... really. Even on full attenuation (although I won't need it very often as the Rt 66 is not as loud as I heard it would be), just a drop in volume NOT tone (Alessandro Muzzle). The 2/12 open back with blues even gave it a lively breathy sound! Really nice gentleman.... a most excellent amp! Merks

I just retubed mine and got immediately reminded on how great this amp sounds, especially cranked a bit. The sound is so 3D that I find myself just hitting a note or chord and stopping to take it all in. The sound just seems to go forever. What an amp. Will never sell this one!

well, I finally was able to make the trip across the border to pick up my weber silver bell this morning. I immediately installed it and got to play around with it for an hour. My initial impression is that it is amazing. Im not sure whether 'pre rola' sort of pre-breaks the speaker in or not, but it certainly sounds great out of the box.
So to finally answer your question regarding the alnico silver bell and blue dog combo with the 66, I can say that this is the best the amp has ever sounded to me. I can't wait to try it with the band, im sure it is going to be amazing.
I actually think I like the silver bell better than the blue dog! It kills with the overdrive and fuzz... my sunface has never sounded better.
I work the 'afternoon' shift right now... brutal... so I am limited to practicing in the mornings, but I'll do some more jamming tomorrow.
