I've lost count when it comes to OD pedals, but tried out a Proco RAT2 (bought on a whim) at practice last night...and believe it or not, it sounded GOOD. After some time the Zendrive was just sounding too smooth & refined...I guess the remedy was some more GRIT!
Of course any pedal does well with the 'Ray, but setting the RAT gain at a lowly 9:00, filter noon, and volume an aggressive 3:00, the grind & grit was happenin' in a most pleasing way! Guess I've come full circle, so to speak...at least for now!

I just bought an HBE power screamer from a guy on TGP that came yesterday. I'm very happy. Lots of great tones in there and more gain than I need.
Had a Rat years ago; was a great pedal. I think I replaced it with a Real Tube like Eric Johnson's. Wish I had that back too.

Overdrive pedals seem to get too familiar after a while. I guess OD's are like shoes. No one wants to wear the same pair everyday for the rest of one's life. I just got rid of my Beano Boost and am wanting another "boost" type pedal that is clear and adds sustain and sweetness without the treble or midrange increase, just a volume and intensity increase. I shall find it!

Madison, get the the Keeley 3-way mod on that thing.. it turns it into a monster! I love it. It can do the nice sustainy lead or can get a nice gritty rhythm tone. The mod gives you stock rat, balls out boost, or stock rat w/ an extra clipping diode for a more tubey rat tone. It's a keeper...

Really "honeymooning" with the stock RAT at this point! ;D

I'm in the fresh OD business myself. Got my Boss BD2 back from Keeley a week ago. I like it alot. Open, airy and very transparent with a nice grit. Much different than my Fulldrive. The Fulldrive is a good pedal but it was sounding too smooth to me. The BD2 will be for low gain slight breakup stuff. I just ordered a Boss SD1 super overdrive. I'm going to do the Monte Allums 808 mod to it, but leave the clipping Asymmetrical. I think thats part of what makes the BD2 so good. I'll report back on that one, and hopefully post some clips soon.
If anyone is looking for a Fulldrive 2 with the mini toggle switch, in excellent shape, send me a PM

Cusack Screamer is amazing! I actually have the Cusack Screamer Fuzz but with the Fuzz all the way down it's like the regular Screamer with tone at noon. Y'all should definitelly check it out ... it's NOT "another TS clone" even though it's based on the same premise ... lot's more gain and it literally screams. www.cusackmusic.com/

Very cool indeed!

Iggs and Beckanon, You've got me interested in this Cusack Fuzz-Screamer. I'd love to get something for high gain leads, something a bit 'nasty'! The best I've had for a while was my Hellbilly slamming a ZVex Fuzz Factory, but the FF was borrowed so I had to give it back. This sounds like what I'm after. The route 66 LOVES fuzz!

Sorry for the hijacking of this thread...but here's the Cusack website for you tas: cusackmusic.com/?If I remember correctly, it's a clearer, brighter sounding screamer variant. And with that fuzz option it really can rip with a Rt.66. Shoot...now all this talk has me thinking about getting one! Only thing is they aren't painted, except for a black finish if you want it. If I were to get one I'd send it to Donnerbox, for my own custom finish job: www.donnerbox.com/

Yeah ... the McFuzz I had was very nice, I really liked it a lot but after playing with it for a bit it just didn't have the "edge" I was looking for ... Got the Screamer Fuzz and it's exactly what I was looking for ... it can get quite nasty but it can have some ripping lead tones as well, quite versatile, can't get a "bad" sound out of it.

Er, update on the ProCo RAT ;D...
I gigged with it in a new club Saturday and I actually like it better than the Zendrive. Funny, my pedal board has the lowly regarded CS-3 and RAT...but they are working very well for me.
The comp is giving the 'Ray a controlled snappy country tone, and the RAT almost seems to overide the comp and throws the notes out it a nice "grindy" fashion, with little apparent compression. Now that I'm satisfied it'll work, I'm going to send it to Keeley for the mod Johnny speaks of. Also scored a set of Kinman's, (thanks Curt!) that I plan to have installed in my Am Del Tele this week.

I played my '52 reissue Tele with Kinman Avn 48s into my Ghia the other day. Sounded really good!
