Well, I've had a few days at home (and soon, tonight with band) to mess around with Rollo's new Blue Collar and BJF Dyna Red. Today, I visited a friend's music store where I got to test drive a Klon Centaur and a Radial Tonebone Classic on a Zinky Blue Velvet amp. Plenty of dirt pedals...and hell, I'm a dirty white boy so it's a blast.
I'm gonna hold off on the full Blue Collar/Dyna Red report until after the gig tonight. Quickly though, I'm struck by how similar these two can sound -- the BC being perhaps a bit more "creamy"...the DR being "open yet smooth" (just how I remember it! Cool)
I'm really glad I got to finally try a Klon Centaur after all these years of hearing praise/slams on this pedal. After trying it out in the store at pretty descent volume...I'm gonna consider buying one. I GET IT NOW. Light went off in my head, the whole works. It does what many claim. Gain was set low (9:00), Treble was around 10:00, Output 3:00. Enhances an already good tone, adds sustain and a true power tube feeling umph, sweet crunch with the right mix of treble/mids. I found myself in near fantasy wondering what this would sound like with my Rt.66. The Zinky is not a bad amp BTW. I don't really go for the retro/mod/velvet covering, but the sounds are a nice vox/marshall mix. I found the Klon to be very touch sensitive and responds great to volume knob changes. Harmonic content with picked-note chirpiness is really cool too.
The Tonebone Classic is perhaps the most versatile pedal I've ever tried. I don't detect a huge difference between what the 12AX7 in this pedal adds as opposed to most ss pedals, but it produces some very nice sounds indeed. I'm not one for all the switches and knobs, either. But I found a few real nice sounds on a Hamer bridge pickup and some neck pickup settings. I would hope with this pedal once you find some optimum tones it would be set-and-forget. Otherwise, I might have a hard time remembering my settings if I veer to far off my base tone. Nice, sturdy pedal though with a big range of good light OD to very heavy OD sounds.
The Zinky amp had a descent clean channel...the most usable sounds for me leaned a little on the dark tone side. The Drive channel is very impressive. A nice, dynamic Marshall sounding crunch. There is a single tone knob on each channel...I was able to set a tone that captured the right blend of bass and top end on the dirt channel. Fun little amp.
